When I first went looking for Legion fanfic, I rolled my eyes at the amount of Gabriel/Audrey stuff -- their only interaction in the movie was choking each other out in the backseat of a cruiser before making an abrupt exit through the windshield. But the fanfic authors really gave them both new life, and now they're one of my favorite couples in fiction.From the top down:
Audrey's huggin' on her angel because he sort of always looks like he could use a hug. As someone married to a big guy of her own, it's hard not to want to hang off them for fun.
Audrey slices a cake with one of Gabriel's blade feathers. Anybody who gets the MST3K reference has my love.
And Gabriel continues his campaign to get Audrey to give a crap about philosophy (as begun in Ghosts of Babylon ), but she'd much rather stick to her novels. She's reading Chris Moore's Island of the Sequined Love Nun.

Ha ha! I just love these guys. 
I think the reason the pairing works is because both displayed real vulnerability and had fleshed out characters. They could have been total 2D archetypes, vengeful, unfeeling, automaton angel and bitchy, weak, annoying, slutty teenager. Instead you have Gabriel displaying a great deal of pain at what he has to do and love for his brother, but he's at war with himself, because he's so certain that following his father's word is what must be right. And Audrey, interestingly, becomes her true self once all the bad stuff starts to come down and though she's terrified she's brave and hopeful. She rushes out to try and help Kyle w/o thinking, she helps Charlie give birth and protects that baby, she tries to get through to her mom, basically she doesn't break down, she kind of comes into her own. Heck, she sacrifices her life for Charlie, Jeep, and the baby. By then you're really sad to see her go, you don't think she should be killed and then they kind of just leave her, skipping over most of the crashes aftermath. I think that because of that, her growth and noble, but unfair death and just the possibilities of everything Gabriel would have to deal with after that heartbreaking revelation for him, are what make the two so interesting to fanfic writers. Sorry about the long comment, I couldn't help myself.

No, I absolutely agree, and I haven't heard anybody really spell it out this way yet. You're 100% right. They were both pretty interesting characters that were hurt in their own ways. It's nice to see them help each other, you know?

I love the way you drew the second image, there's just something about the gesture and expression that's amusing even without the dialogue. I also like Audrey's expression in the third image.
I just generally like how you can tell a story without any dialogue. It's a lovely gift.

Quite true. In fact, I think it was almost better that I hadn't finished the movie. I hadn't even gotten to the point where Gabe showed up at the scene, which I feel made it easier to accept the characterizations rather than base them on impressions I had during the movie. Either way, I'm a little bit compelled now to give the movie another shot.

Gotta say, Durand does a stellar job as Gabriel. And I think for the most part the actors did all they could with that they were given, but he just really knocked it out of the park. I heavily employ the fast-forward when I do watch it. ;D
