Description Another drawing for Heather Remaly's Ghosts Of Babylon , which WILL be continued! (I AM EXCITE)

In the story -- and I don't think it's spoilery to say this -- Gabriel brings Audrey up to a cave high in the mountains where he sews up her cuts and sets her broken leg and such. When she has enough strength to be bitching about anything, he tells her she's not going to be leaving the cave, ever. He intends to bring her everything she needs, but keep her away from other humans altogether. At that point I had to step away from the computer and go punch some walls. I just started thinking of all the ways I'd try to leave, broken leg be damned.

Clearly things get better between the two, but not before they get considerably worse. He loves her, but to Audrey he's just a violent, possessive giant who doesn't know how to find clothes that fit her.

I don't usually bother with backgrounds or complicated shading, and I'm no Chris Van Allsburg, obviously, but this turned out pretty okay. Audrey surprised me again with her attitude. This is a girl who's not afraid to punch an archangel even when she can't stand up on her own.

I think he doesn't intend to actually put his hands on her, since she'd probably just wheel and punch him or something. Not that he'd be afraid of her girly little punches, but she'd probably lose her balance. She's like a wounded cat.

Yes, but wounded cats are scary. Wounded girls are scary, too, and she could easily get broken by accident taking out aggressions on an archangel, which I think is his worry. BTW, found a book called 'Angelology'. Very Dan Brown religion/conspiracy theory/secret society kinda thing. Haven't read it yet, but it looks fun. Loads of other angel-related books out right now, I've noticed. Maybe sparkly-pointy-creatures are on the outs and winged ones are in?

Ha ha! Oh, angels have been hip since they wrote the book, I imagine. They sort of trump all other mystical creatures, yeah?

It's the wings. And the stoicism. They don't need a Volvo to be cool.

THIS.

I wasn't too big a fan of the movie, but I loved the Angels in it, and I actually like Audrey's character. The side characters were a lot better than the mains, haha.

That aside, I LOVE this fic! I'm so glad you linked it; now I'm (im)patiently waiting for a new chapter!

I love this scene. The obvious need on Gabriel's face for Audrey to understand, to accept. Her defiance. But there, just there in her eyes, you can see just a little tell that she wants to accept it. I picture her brow lifting slightly, her hand dropping from the cave wall, her eyes closing as her head droops in resignation just after this scene.

Oh the stories you tell with your art.

I absolutely love it when people look at something I drew and feel their own story take off. C: That makes me so happy. She makes some pretty serious attempts after this, and they all totally break Gabriel's heart, but then they start to understand each other, I think. It's a great story.

Some stories make me want to punch a wall, too--especially anything that involves someone being intimidated, humiliated, or treated like a possession. I try to tell myself it's just fiction, and the events aren't actually happening, and the character that I'm identifying with isn't actually me, and I've never even experienced anything similar to what she's experiencing . . . but I still feel a personal stake in what happens to characters like Audrey, and desperately want them to win (and for the villain--sympathetic or otherwise--to admit that he/she was wrong).

You drew their emotions so well, in their postures and expressions--I haven't read the story yet, but I can tell that Gabriel really is, at heart, a good guy...just badly misguided. His expression looks like a mixture of sadness (i.e. "Please don't hate me, Audrey"), with a kind of patience that suggests he still believes he's doing the right thing, and just has to wait for Audrey to accept her fate--like, if he just stands there long enough, being quiet, and touching her shoulder, she'll come around.

Audrey, meanwhile, has a look of almost-resignation, but definitely not acceptance--like she's realized (or is starting to fear) that she can't fight Gabriel, and (but she doesn't want to believe this) maybe she'll never get her way, but whatever the case, there's no way in hell she's going to act grateful to him. And maybe if she stares hard enough at the wall, she can find some answer there, or at least she could ignore Gabriel hard enough to make him really disappear.

Your drawings work brilliantly without any complex, super-detailed background--it's the characters that matter so much more.

YES. Yes. I know exactly how you feel. I get so emotionally wrapped up in stories, it's crazy. I seriously stomped around and cried after reading all that, just thinking how I'd set fire to everything. People aren't cage animals, FOR REAL.

I think Gabriel's patience is pretty scary, when you think about it. Like, you know you can't win against a boxer who never gets tired. There's no arguing with an angel. And yeah, I think it says a lot about the state of her resignation that she decides to jump from the cliff. A hard lesson for Gabriel, that she'd rather die than stay there, but it's nice that they both kind of came around.

I'm so glad you like this! I love to hear you go on. C:

Aww, thanks! Sometimes I wonder if I'm getting too deep into my rantings, and whether people's eyes are glazing over yet

I'm currently going through this with a Labyrinth story called "The Goblin Market." And Jareth is definitely worse than Gabriel, because to some extent he enjoys infuriating Sarah...it gets really complicated, though, in terms of his motivations and desires, so you can tell he's not really a "villain"...but then, that feeling of "You're supposed to be the good guy, why are you doing this to me??" is what makes those Gabriel-like characters even more infuriating.

And there are certainly a bunch of Gabriel-like characters in "The Goblin Market" that just smile patiently and pat you on the shoulder while they're screwing you over because, hey, they're just doing their job and surely you'll understand eventually that it's all for your own good, dearie... *wants to stab a fork into the computer screen*

lily-fox In reply to NeriSiren [2011-03-26 23:49:48 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, I HATE stories like that! I once read this Labyrinth fic where Jareth was this horrible, abusive, possessive tyrant, and he stole Sarah's children in order to keep her humiliated. I was just like... Why would you write something like this? Something must have seriously gone wrong in that author's life, that she would abuse Sarah so perversely in writing. Or is that me being intolerant? But after reading that, I swore off "serious" Labyrinth fics forever.

I think the way people portray Jareth is an interesting personality barometer. Because he's extremely sexy, there's inherently part of the writer that wants him, and depending on what flavors his personality takes on sort of indicates what a person might be attracted to. If you give him some snide, cruel side without balancing it with redemption, that kind of says something to me. You know what I mean?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NeriSiren In reply to lily-fox [2011-03-27 07:38:23 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I agree. That balance is definitely key for Labyrinth stories. If Jareth had no sarcastic, mercurial personality, he'd be too out of character (I mean, just think of him saying those sarcastic things in Bowie's delicious voice...), but a purely evil Jareth just isn't my cup of tea.

I do think "The Goblin Market" is finding that balance, and making Jareth a complex character who, at bottom level, really does care about Sarah...it's just taking a while for him to let go of his "King" mentality (and the story suggests that it's not all his choice the way he acts). As far as I can tell, there's potential for Sarah to get some kind of justice, which keeps me reading, but in the meantime certain events/characters are driving me nuts

Yeah, I need to read those kinds of stories in moderation.

I would be pissed too! Man being cooped up in a cave! I would be raving mad. Love the emotion in this piece. I also love the simplicity of the background. Simple but it shows enough contrast that we know it's a cave. Love that we can see Audrey's broken leg.

I am completely diggin' all this GoB jazz, especially Audrey. I feel like I need to connect more with my own inner version of her, y'know? A character that perhaps some ladies (and some men) can learn a thing or two from.

(Hopefully the revised version of Hounds & Scoundrels will be just as inspiring to you. I've finally gotten over my hurt feelings enough to look at the critiques I got back in class, haha.)

lily-fox In reply to seussical-love [2011-03-25 23:45:31 +0000 UTC]

Do not give up on Hounds, okay? I was seriously enjoying it, and I can't wait to see more. I'm not in any writing class or anything, but I know what I like.

And you're right. I mean, in the story, Audrey's pretty obstinate about a lot of things, but she's seventeen, so that kind of comes with the territory. You can't expect a teenage girl to be totally reasonable about everything. ;D But she doesn't take a lot of crap from anybody, and that's admirable.
