Description
Jenny felt like she was in love with everybody she really shared herself with at the time, then looking back, she'd dismiss it. Not Chevalier . Looking back, she knows it was love long before it was anything else. After Cheval, she would chase that love and not find it (not until Eli ).He was a rare animal; unwounded but careful, well-mannered by habit, genuinely happy with nothing to hide. Woke up on the right side of the bed every day. He never seemed to get really angry, held no grudges, was never bothered by the opinions or ire of others, and it made Jenny terrifically self-conscious. Her own wrath was like a poltergeist, coming out of nowhere to destroy a room. Sometimes she'd find herself trying to pick fights with him, and it bewildered him under his smile. She would shove him, punch his chest, and he would take her fists in both his hands and kiss them.
Cheval grew up in a suburb of Vancouver with three younger sisters and a long line of German Shepherds. He was the tallest Chevalier in the family tree, and the tallest kid in his school, which made him a target for every idiot with something to prove, so he started working out. He got real big real fast, and was courted by a boxing coach from a local gym who showed him how to win those fights when he couldn't walk away. By nineteen, he was competing in the AIBA heavyweight division, and he had a choice to make -- recruit to join the Vancouver police department, as he'd planned since he was a kid, or pursue what looked to be a winning boxing career. His coach persuaded him to stay.
He had no killer disposition, but made up for it with skill and stamina. He competed for three years, until he won by knockout against a young Samoan dude whose mother came to find Cheval at the gym the next day. She told him he'd broken her son's jaw and neck; they'd put him in a steel halo collar. The gym fell quiet while she shouted at Cheval through tears, slapped him and left. He handed his gloves to his coach that afternoon. He just wasn't cut out for a mean sport.
After that, he laid low, made friends, saved his earnings. Worked as a bartender in an Irish pub, where he met Miss Kiva, the owner of Clever Girls gentleman's club, who was looking for bouncers. Reluctant to get into a job that required him to be physically threatening, Kiva asked him to think of it as being a protector, not a thug. Her girls needed to be looked after, not just looked at. So he took the job, and there he met a pretty hostess named Ruby, whose personality filled him with joy. It was two months before he saw her without her long wig, one night after closing.
She bent over and shook out her loose mohawk with her fingers, and grinned at his expression.
"Is it a dealbreaker?" she asked.
He said, "I think I'm in love."
--------
This is Chevalier the way I wanted him. Kevin Durand has a little bit of a preternatural handsomeness that don't wanna be put down on my paper, but I'm satisfied. I do like inking this way. The little junk boat I drew, but the waves are from stock by christinemarie33 (and are apparently by Hokusai). They were absolutely perfect.

Is it my birthday? Is Nicolas Cage going to show up at my house with a bottle of champagne? Is he going to rub my feet while we watch Beauty and the Beast, then hold me tenderly while I cry at the end? Oh, it must be my birthday, because now he's saying something about riding horses on the beach...
(Note: this is completely unrelated to the birthday fantasy in which Robert Downey Jr. takes me to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park. )

Ha ha! XD Oh my god, these are wonderful. Horse riding on the beach! I'm picturing the cover of a harlequin romance novel, with bosoms exposed and like cheesecloth on the lens. AMAZING.

I'd have to take a cue from Jenny and get myself a nice long wig--- the better to ripple majestically in the wind as we gallop in slow-mo through the shallow surf, our splashes turned into halos as they catch the setting sun...
Nic's shirt is unbuttoned to the navel. My gown somehow manages to be a whole lot of dress while still showing a whole lot of leg and a whole lot of bosom. Our horses are white...
...oh dear. I seem to be getting rather carried away with all this. ;D

This is really beautiful, I love the way you did the lines and that line-shadowing, it's absolutely gorgeous! Also because of the delicate coloring and bg the whole picture looks so peaceful...

I LOVE that style of sail ship. It seems so epic-adventurous. And great choice of waves--both the color and style--against that parchment-like background. It illustrates the characters' dreams, and their relationship, as something wild and stormy (but in a good way, somehow). You really draw these intimate moments well, with any characters you use.

Hi, lovely picture: your inking style is particularly fantastic. I did want to point out that the waves are actually originally Hokusai's very famous "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" [link] since that wasn't mentioned on christinemarie33 's page for them. She manipulated them nicely, but I just wanted you to know their origin. It's one of my favorite pieces.

You know, so many people do Hokusai-style waves very well, so I wasn't sure if it was one of his pieces, but that totally makes sense. I have deep love for Hokusai. Thanks for the heads-up!

Yeah, you're making me prefer him to Eli too! But they're both such excellent people for Jenny. Why must your design such perfectly human yet inhumanly wonderful men?
I love love love the sketchy quality of these past couple Jenny drawings, especially with how your drew their hair; I've been missing Jenny's fauxhawk, and guys like Cheval with close-cropped hair are so hard to draw convincingly. TOTALLY jealous of the delicacy of your lines! What a neat idea with the ocean and the ship surrounding them, it makes it look like something out of a dream.
BOTTOM LINE I go nutsy over your art.

I totally agree about boys with short hair. Seems like people, especially girls, tend to give their guys shaggy hair at the very least. I just couldn't see it on Cheval. And I'll tell you, Eli will get the chance to show how right he is for her.

Hee hee! No, trust me, Eli is the One. Without a doubt there will be times when Jenny thinks very fondly of Cheval, but he's destined for someone who won't punch him when she gets upset. ;D And Eli makes Jenny not feel so full of rage all the time, which is good for everybody!

Durand does have this kind of darling baby face, when he's not playing some psychotic killer.

that's very true, I watched Smokin' Aces, which was

He was hilarious in the new Robin Hood

Seriously, what's his ratio to evil vs. stable characters? Grossly disproportionate, I reckon. Haven't seen Robin Hood yet, but I find myself wanting to watch Legion again and again -- also terrible, except for Durand!

yeah, I believe so. I think you'd be happy with him in Robin Hood,
he's Little John and he gets some really funny lines!
I didn't know he was in Legion until I saw it. I went cause I love
Paul Bettany but Durand was a bonus. Bad movies with good actors
can be pretty fun, haha!

I read that he started out wanting to be a comedian, but was foiled by his bigness. I guess it's hard to be funny and huge! And oh man, talk to me about Paul Bettany. <3

FangsAndNeedles In reply to lily-fox [2011-02-10 02:10:48 +0000 UTC]
that's understandable. hard to try to be funny when people
think you'll punch their lights out if they don't laugh...
no hecklers for him!
Paul Bettany is so awesome, he doesn't get the recognition
or the parts that he deserves! Knight's Tale is still my
favourite of his, he was so wonderful in that one

I don't know if I still have any of them in my gallery, but I used to have a bunch of drawings of Bettany. Ugh, his Maturin SEIZED my heart. He has such a wounded look about him sometimes. He's so diverse, I think he could do anything. I say he was an icicle in Legion, but he had moments of raw, skinless emotion and compassion. If that flick had been less concerned with being a freakshow, it could've really been a heck of a thing. Here I go proselytizing again. Men!

Yes! he played Maturin amazingly as well. I always
get squirmy when the self-operating part happens,
he makes it feel so real
it could have been really great! *sigh* I'm holding
out some hope for his new one. He tends to end up
in a lot of movies that involve religion.
lol! ^^
