Description
Jenny felt like she was in love with everybody she really shared herself with at the time, then looking back, she'd dismiss it. Not Chevalier . Looking back, she knows it was love long before it was anything else. After Cheval, she would chase that love and not find it (not until Eli ).He was a rare animal; unwounded but careful, well-mannered by habit, genuinely happy with nothing to hide. Woke up on the right side of the bed every day. He never seemed to get really angry, held no grudges, was never bothered by the opinions or ire of others, and it made Jenny terrifically self-conscious. Her own wrath was like a poltergeist, coming out of nowhere to destroy a room. Sometimes she'd find herself trying to pick fights with him, and it bewildered him under his smile. She would shove him, punch his chest, and he would take her fists in both his hands and kiss them.
Cheval grew up in a suburb of Vancouver with three younger sisters and a long line of German Shepherds. He was the tallest Chevalier in the family tree, and the tallest kid in his school, which made him a target for every idiot with something to prove, so he started working out. He got real big real fast, and was courted by a boxing coach from a local gym who showed him how to win those fights when he couldn't walk away. By nineteen, he was competing in the AIBA heavyweight division, and he had a choice to make -- recruit to join the Vancouver police department, as he'd planned since he was a kid, or pursue what looked to be a winning boxing career. His coach persuaded him to stay.
He had no killer disposition, but made up for it with skill and stamina. He competed for three years, until he won by knockout against a young Samoan dude whose mother came to find Cheval at the gym the next day. She told him he'd broken her son's jaw and neck; they'd put him in a steel halo collar. The gym fell quiet while she shouted at Cheval through tears, slapped him and left. He handed his gloves to his coach that afternoon. He just wasn't cut out for a mean sport.
After that, he laid low, made friends, saved his earnings. Worked as a bartender in an Irish pub, where he met Miss Kiva, the owner of Clever Girls gentleman's club, who was looking for bouncers. Reluctant to get into a job that required him to be physically threatening, Kiva asked him to think of it as being a protector, not a thug. Her girls needed to be looked after, not just looked at. So he took the job, and there he met a pretty hostess named Ruby, whose personality filled him with joy. It was two months before he saw her without her long wig, one night after closing.
She bent over and shook out her loose mohawk with her fingers, and grinned at his expression.
"Is it a dealbreaker?" she asked.
He said, "I think I'm in love."

This is Chevalier the way I wanted him. Kevin Durand has a little bit of a preternatural handsomeness that don't wanna be put down on my paper, but I'm satisfied. I do like inking this way. The little junk boat I drew, but the waves are from stock by christinemarie33 (and are apparently by Hokusai). They were absolutely perfect.

The back story was great. I love the composition of this piece. They're off to the side, sleeping (or on the brink of sleeping) The ship could easily represent dreams (a recurring image in children's poetry and stories) and the waves with dips and crests, both like the cycles of slumber and like the actual sea itself, calming and constant sounds that have the power to lullaby one to sleep, hypnotic.
The waves are quite "Hokusai" and I'm sure the person who provided you with the stock did that on purpose. ^_^

I was told the waves actually ARE Hokusai. Maybe the person took a photo of the painting? Either way, I just loved it. C:
I love that feeling just before you fall asleep, when it feels like your bed is spinning slowly. I totally associate waves with sleeping, too.

Ah. I see. I knew they looked just like it but I didn't know if she was mimicking the style or not.
And I love that feeling too! when I'm just so exhausted.... it's like my bed is suspended on something really really high and narrow and it's just waving lightly. It's like a little mini feeling of vertigo but I'm too tired to care.

Absolutely gorgeous, dear! I adore how you inked this, AND that cute little boat too! :3 This makes me want to hug it. Or go hug my boyfriend. Yup, I think I'll go hug him. x3
So glad to see Jenny again so soon!

I ought to make like a timeline of Jenny's boyfriends and girlfriends. ;D I know it gets confusing because I draw them out of order. So far that I've drawn, it goes Lucas, Cheval, Jude, Eli, with some in between and for different lengths of time.
I'm so glad you like Cheval! I sure like him, too.

Jenny's mohawk has always been one of my favorite things about her and I'm glad to see it here! I was worried she would hide it from Cheval for as long as she could. I'm also glad to learn more about Cheval. He's such a nice guy and it definitely shows in his face. =3
This picture is peaceful and has a rhythm to it with the waves you got in the bottom. I sway my head side to side when I look at it. =3

Heh, I think she wasn't intending to hide it, just that they never saw each other outside of the club for a long time. She seems pretty comfortable with her hawk. C:

It always makes me feel funny when people say they miss Jude, but I realize I didn't write about their breakup. Jude was created by someone else, someone who turned out to be a genuinely rotten person. I look back and wish I could erase Jude, but it's fair for people to have liked him. That's how relationships go sometimes, right?

Sorry to hear my comment was the object of your discomfort and that a truly interesting character was created by a truly malignant one. But, if it helps, I personally feel your story adds truth and reality to Jenny's story. And even if it hurts, there is a beauty to it. A sense of memory that resonates in all our lives, flashing before our vision like a long-forgotten photograph that seems familiar but new. As a fan of your work, it gives me a feel of connectedness that can pique an emotional reaction. In my opinion, that's true art.

Thank you so much! Yeah, I really like these two together, but I think he deserves someone more stable than Jenny. It was important that she meet Cheval and be with him, I think, to show her what a good man really is. By the time she meets Eli, she's not such an angry person anymore. C:

Ohhhh, yeah, I can definitely see the Durand in there. Those sweetheart lips! He does have a really distinct type of beauty, rather difficult to describe and probably more difficult to draw. I think you've really done a bang-up job this time! And I believe I've mentioned it before, but it bears reiterating: his arms. Are works. Of art. Love the way he's got that big wing of his all wrapped around her tight. He ain't gonna let her get swept away--- not yet. <3
Jenny, as always, looks gorgeous. Nice to see the mohawk again, hee. Her ghost of a smile speaks volumes. And I love their matching t-shirts, awwww!
I am mesmerized by the little junk boat perched on top of the great wave. Gorgeous.
The story you've created for Cheval is just too sweet. He reminds me a lot of my age-little size-BIG brother--- a huge, powerful man with a soft little heart. I especially like that gallant streak, that "protector of women," that earning of the name Chevalier. Really lovely stuff, always a joy to read.
Well, I seem to have written you an essay. I was just really, really fond of this piece! It's simply marvelous. Thanks for sharing.

Ugh, Kevin Durand. <3 I declare. That man's mouth is poetry, and let's don't even get started on that body. If he starts going gray at the temples, it's game over, man, just sell my stuff and send me the money, I'm done. ^u^
