Description Jenny felt like she was in love with everybody she really shared herself with at the time, then looking back, she'd dismiss it. Not Chevalier . Looking back, she knows it was love long before it was anything else. After Cheval, she would chase that love and not find it (not until Eli ).

He was a rare animal; unwounded but careful, well-mannered by habit, genuinely happy with nothing to hide. Woke up on the right side of the bed every day. He never seemed to get really angry, held no grudges, was never bothered by the opinions or ire of others, and it made Jenny terrifically self-conscious. Her own wrath was like a poltergeist, coming out of nowhere to destroy a room. Sometimes she'd find herself trying to pick fights with him, and it bewildered him under his smile. She would shove him, punch his chest, and he would take her fists in both his hands and kiss them.

Cheval grew up in a suburb of Vancouver with three younger sisters and a long line of German Shepherds. He was the tallest Chevalier in the family tree, and the tallest kid in his school, which made him a target for every idiot with something to prove, so he started working out. He got real big real fast, and was courted by a boxing coach from a local gym who showed him how to win those fights when he couldn't walk away. By nineteen, he was competing in the AIBA heavyweight division, and he had a choice to make -- recruit to join the Vancouver police department, as he'd planned since he was a kid, or pursue what looked to be a winning boxing career. His coach persuaded him to stay.

He had no killer disposition, but made up for it with skill and stamina. He competed for three years, until he won by knockout against a young Samoan dude whose mother came to find Cheval at the gym the next day. She told him he'd broken her son's jaw and neck; they'd put him in a steel halo collar. The gym fell quiet while she shouted at Cheval through tears, slapped him and left. He handed his gloves to his coach that afternoon. He just wasn't cut out for a mean sport.

After that, he laid low, made friends, saved his earnings. Worked as a bartender in an Irish pub, where he met Miss Kiva, the owner of Clever Girls gentleman's club, who was looking for bouncers. Reluctant to get into a job that required him to be physically threatening, Kiva asked him to think of it as being a protector, not a thug. Her girls needed to be looked after, not just looked at. So he took the job, and there he met a pretty hostess named Ruby, whose personality filled him with joy. It was two months before he saw her without her long wig, one night after closing.

She bent over and shook out her loose mohawk with her fingers, and grinned at his expression.

"Is it a dealbreaker?" she asked.

He said, "I think I'm in love."

--------

This is Chevalier the way I wanted him. Kevin Durand has a little bit of a preternatural handsomeness that don't wanna be put down on my paper, but I'm satisfied. I do like inking this way. The little junk boat I drew, but the waves are from stock by christinemarie33 (and are apparently by Hokusai). They were absolutely perfect.

I had to look up the word "pithy", and I totally love it. I think I always assumed it meant something unpleasant, since it sounds like somebody cussing with a lisp. I'm so glad you like the writing; I used to write all the time, but never as in-depth, never trying to suss out histories or anything. It's a lot of fun, and I feel like I discover them as I write 'em.

Hey, I love long, wordy comments. C: They're like nourishment for my ego!

Gorgeously inked, and all together very heartfelt. Your background stories continue to amaze, as well! I love the idea of Jenny really finding love with Eli, and I hope we get to see more of him, too.

There will definitely be more of Eli, don't you worry. And I'm glad you liked this!

Ok, this made me "awww" at the end when she asked if it was a dealbreaker and he responded with "I think I'm in love." Aside from that I adore your Jenny stories and I think I am much more like her than I realized. Whenever my husband and I get into arguments I find myself reacting how Jenny does in this story, purposefully trying to push his buttons and hurt him. I know that sounds like I'm a horrible person. However, I do know when I'm doing it and I try to calm myself down and my husband knows I do it and he points out to me when I'm purposefully pushing his buttons.

Hey: you know how I know why Jenny acts that way? Because I do it, too. I have a mean, mean temper, and my husband bears the brunt of it with incredible good grace. He knows how to stand up for himself, but he also knows when I just need to bitch and break a plate. Our men love us anyway, and we learn from their patience. That's part of what makes them so great!

Oh gawd, you've got me falling in love with him!
If you ever decide to make a book about Jenny's life, please make sure you put these little blurbs under the pictures. They just weave between my heartstrings. I so ejoy seing a work of yours in my inbox, truly.

lily-fox In reply to foreverstrange [2011-02-10 00:30:23 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha! You know, a book is kind of a neat idea! I wouldn't necessarily have to do like a comic, but just pictures and text. You never know! And yeah, he's extremely lovable. ^u^

foreverstrange In reply to lily-fox [2011-02-10 00:46:56 +0000 UTC]

I imagined it just like that. Just being. I think that's Jenny's style. she is what she is, and she tells you what happened, well, most of what happened
I think a comic style would make a novelty of her life and her journeys, which isn't what she's about.
I'm glad you're considering it now! I'd definitely buy it! As a coffee table book, or just a picture book. Like kids ones, there there to be beautiful, tell a story and be entertaining.

Love your stories and love Jenny. I'm glad to see her with a mohawk again, as I just recently regained my own It's been too long since I had one! Hard to believe I ever doubted it. Long hair be damned (on me, anyway!).
I think I've said this before on your images, but I often find your stories and tidbits about Jenny reflecting the current stages of my own life. It might be because we genuinely have a few similarities, but I think it's more likely to be the result of your wonderful storytelling, both through the illustrations and the text. It's not often that you find someone who is willing to make their own characters so lifelike, unafraid to give them both realistic beauty and flaws (flaws, of course, being inseparable from true beauty).
Not to ramble. Just glad to be seeing your original characters again. Please never stop drawing them.

lily-fox In reply to deadkitty [2011-02-10 00:28:13 +0000 UTC]

Man, I wish I had the confidence to wear exciting hair, but I can't imagine a mohawk would look any good on a freckly redhead. ;D

This is a wonderful comment. Thank you. I think Jenny's easy to relate to because she screws up like the rest of us, and she, you know, she's a good person. Whatever happens, we know she's really a good person.

God I love the stories you create, they're such a nice treat when they show up in my devwatch. I missed hearing about Jenny too, and I'm glad she's back, her and her awesome mohawk.

This one is probably the most enthralling romance of her's yet! Can't wait to hear more about it, even though we already know it isn't going to work out.

Well, I know it's a bummer to say goodbye to anybody you've shared your life with, but I figure it's all important in getting you where you need to be, right? And you know she and Cheval both will end up extremely happy. I'm glad you like this!

The picture of the two is so...heartwarming....like when two good friends of yours fall in love and your so freaking happy for them. Sad to know this won't last. This Jenny-girl really seems complicated.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lily-fox In reply to Folding [2011-02-09 21:50:28 +0000 UTC]

Jenny's a complex person, but she grows up eventually. Which, I mean, is a good thing. You can't be young and restless forever. I know it's sad to ever have to say goodbye to someone you love, but the both of them are destined for people who are right for them. Cheval will find the One, too. C: I don't know if that helps.

Folding In reply to lily-fox [2011-02-10 09:14:26 +0000 UTC]

It helps a little. It's just that the two of them seem so content in your pictures, hard to imagine them seperated.
