Description Jenny felt like she was in love with everybody she really shared herself with at the time, then looking back, she'd dismiss it. Not Chevalier . Looking back, she knows it was love long before it was anything else. After Cheval, she would chase that love and not find it (not until Eli ).

He was a rare animal; unwounded but careful, well-mannered by habit, genuinely happy with nothing to hide. Woke up on the right side of the bed every day. He never seemed to get really angry, held no grudges, was never bothered by the opinions or ire of others, and it made Jenny terrifically self-conscious. Her own wrath was like a poltergeist, coming out of nowhere to destroy a room. Sometimes she'd find herself trying to pick fights with him, and it bewildered him under his smile. She would shove him, punch his chest, and he would take her fists in both his hands and kiss them.

Cheval grew up in a suburb of Vancouver with three younger sisters and a long line of German Shepherds. He was the tallest Chevalier in the family tree, and the tallest kid in his school, which made him a target for every idiot with something to prove, so he started working out. He got real big real fast, and was courted by a boxing coach from a local gym who showed him how to win those fights when he couldn't walk away. By nineteen, he was competing in the AIBA heavyweight division, and he had a choice to make -- recruit to join the Vancouver police department, as he'd planned since he was a kid, or pursue what looked to be a winning boxing career. His coach persuaded him to stay.

He had no killer disposition, but made up for it with skill and stamina. He competed for three years, until he won by knockout against a young Samoan dude whose mother came to find Cheval at the gym the next day. She told him he'd broken her son's jaw and neck; they'd put him in a steel halo collar. The gym fell quiet while she shouted at Cheval through tears, slapped him and left. He handed his gloves to his coach that afternoon. He just wasn't cut out for a mean sport.

After that, he laid low, made friends, saved his earnings. Worked as a bartender in an Irish pub, where he met Miss Kiva, the owner of Clever Girls gentleman's club, who was looking for bouncers. Reluctant to get into a job that required him to be physically threatening, Kiva asked him to think of it as being a protector, not a thug. Her girls needed to be looked after, not just looked at. So he took the job, and there he met a pretty hostess named Ruby, whose personality filled him with joy. It was two months before he saw her without her long wig, one night after closing.

She bent over and shook out her loose mohawk with her fingers, and grinned at his expression.

"Is it a dealbreaker?" she asked.

He said, "I think I'm in love."

--------

This is Chevalier the way I wanted him. Kevin Durand has a little bit of a preternatural handsomeness that don't wanna be put down on my paper, but I'm satisfied. I do like inking this way. The little junk boat I drew, but the waves are from stock by christinemarie33 (and are apparently by Hokusai). They were absolutely perfect.

I love hearing more about Jenny and her life and the people in it. Makes me want to come up with my own alter ego like you've done with Jenny, only I' sure mine wouldn't be quite so magical. q:

Hey, sorry for leaving you hanging bruh (:>
Thing is, no matter how hard I think about it (and I've been thinking hard ever since this exchange) I don't know what an alter ego for myself would be like. Did you have a 'formula' (for want of a better word) in creating Jenny?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

lily-fox In reply to muffinpoodle [2011-03-01 20:53:09 +0000 UTC]

Ha ha, you used surfer lingo. C: You know, with Jenny, I felt like I needed something like a suit of armor. I've always felt fairly inadequate and screamingly uncool, and here was Jenny, who was extremely cool. She's made up of my worst qualities (hyperemotional, romantically unreliable, self-conscious, paranoid and dangerously wrathful), and the best qualities I wish I had (and sure, some that I do have). I don't know if that's a really good formula, but that's Jenny, anyhow.

Sequoia , actually, was a friend's alter ego, and I don't know how similar her formula was. She (the creator) always struck me as a very mellow, intensely loving, free-spirited kind of flower girl. You know? And Sequoia exhibits a lot of brute strength and stoicism. Maybe she felt like she needed armor, too.

That you can't think of an alter ego is actually kind of cool, because it means you don't feel inadequate. C: That's rare and wonderful. Don't force it if it don't wanna come!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

muffinpoodle In reply to lily-fox [2011-03-03 07:36:50 +0000 UTC]

Lol, yeah. Not a surfer, but here in Australa it's not unusual to hear any young person talk that way c:

You're right...I probably shouldn't force it. I thought over your method for myself, but nothing felt quite right. Then I thought about it and realised -- I have a group of five characters who are already filling this position for me. They're made up of my good points, my bad points, things I wish I could be, random traits from my friends, bits of inner child and all that good stuff ^^ I probably couldn't think of a character who makes a better alter ego than is made by their collective efforts.

It's probably partially that I'm happy with the way I am now, I suppose. xP

Sequoia is gorgeous <3 I keep thinking pehaps I could do with some 'armour' too. Because, you know, I don't really have a warrior-type character...I don't know. If it comes to me it'll come. Anyway, thanks!

I really beginning to love Jenny and her man. ;D These characters of yours are just so sweet and genuine, very interesting. And they're so beautiful! I just adore the way you draw their lips.

Is Jenny a Celtics fan? Because I'd love her even more if she was. XD

Thank you! Heh, I do love those kissy lips.

You know, I couldn't even tell you what sport the Celtics play! I think Jenny digs a good minor league baseball game, but otherwise sports are kind of lost on her. Where are the Celtics based?

Moony92 In reply to lily-fox [2011-02-12 03:11:59 +0000 UTC]

So do I. ;D

The Celtics is an NBA basketball team. But I think since she's from Cleveland she'd probably prefer the Cavaliers. x) I'm not a huge sports fan myself, but I do enjoy a good basketball game now and again.

It's so nice seeing your original art again! You do wonderful fan art, but I'm in love with Jenny. And Chevalier sounds like he should have been 'the one'. Honestly, your characters and stories are so well rounded and written.

Cheval was pretty close, I'll say, but I don't think Jenny was the right one for him. He deserves someone more stable and mellow, and he'll find it. I'm glad you dig Jenny's stories!

this is beautiful.
I know I laud your work in a way that can come across as excessive, but I read this, and then the comic with Eli in it, and I'm smiling stupidly. I like how they're both wearing t-shirts in this--it's platonic, and the ship and the waves make it dreamlike, too. Dreams without lust are hard to find in culture, I think.

That's another thing. I adore your artist's comments. When you get into a groove with Jenny, you write beautifully. Your story is gentle and genuine, and you're wonderfully pithy. It's the little details that flesh out your characters, in drawing and in prose, in my mind.

tl;dr -- you're cool.
