Description
A few notes.+ The whole schmeer is inspired by the cover of Ray Lamontagne's Trouble, which is a great album, by the way, and which is why Sarah has no eyes. She's too pretty to blindfold, so I just blinded her. Just for the sake of metaphor, of course.
+ My shadows and shit are all willy-nilly because it's just a sketch and I save the good skills for the final minutes.
+ Jareth's coat is based off that kickass bomb-leather number in roughly the second act of Labyrinth, but I was working from memory and I jacked it all up, and then I decided I didn't care because I like the teeny-weeny bird skull buttons.
+ Yes, he is secreting an apple in his left hand.
+ I'm not making his package any bigger, so QUIT ASKING, JARETH. I don't care how big it is, leave me alone. Crazy goblin.
My sister and I agreed that Jareth reminds us heavily of the devil in our favorite mythology of him–––lonely, angry, arrogant, a bully. When he meets Sarah, who defies and rejects him, he tries to scare and trick her, and then to tempt her with false treasures. He represents every sin and she resists in favor of the best thing in the world: family love. Is Jareth too far gone to have any concept of real love? Does he just want her, like a toy?
Most women, I'm told, imagine the devil as a handsome, charming man. It speaks to our weakness and to our secret belief that we–––that love–––can fix and change anything.
You know, lookin' at this now, I should have given him some horns. I think I will. He would wear them well.

Who else but the devil?
I want to wrap my body around his legs like a warrior in a Frank Frazetta painting.

I forgot to mention that I love the way you draw hands, they are so gentle but you have a sense that they are real. It makes me feel like I want to take his hand . . . even if he is a supposed "devil"

I love your style with the Labyrinth and bowie, everything that you do is fantastic.
But what is with all the Labyrinth/Bowie fans that find his crotch so fascinating?

I knew it would only be a while until you went from David Bowie to Labyrinth, he is so charming in that. Probably my favorite movie since I was a child, me and my sister like to pretend to be the two gouls that say "One of us always tells the truth and one of us always lies, that the the real truth, he tells the lies" "I do not I tell the truth!" "Oh what a lie"
Makes me laugh everytime

Dude, I had those doors figured out before she did, and I was right. Whutwhut.
Oh, it's just a romantic foray into Labyrinth art. Bowie has my heart. I prefer him at 60 with just a whisper of fat about him. ^_^

I think you have entered on my personal top 5 Fav artists ever (not that it matters a big deal though )
this pictures reminded me so badly of ika-la-cynique:'s Labyrinth Untenable [link] is even some similitude in the background color and both present us a rather devious Goblin King, and that is what I call Great Minds Meet, of course there are also big differences, while pika's is covered by a sheer layer of angstiness and pointing to luxury yours still seems innocent at first glance (as the movie itself) but those 'lil symbols and gestures tell so more.
I like the way Jareth seems to be looking to us spectators , I don't know if he is amused or infuriated (both cases he cannot do nothing because he would scare Sarah away)
the clothes!!!! if there is ever a movie (animated of course! and I thrust Pika to be part of the artist crew) they MUST use your jacket design... I hope you will be generous enough to let them.

Oh God, I love that drawing of Pika's, and it's a huge compliment to compare that and this. I wish I could learn to work with white shade, but I don't have any brown or gray paper...
You know, I hadn't given Jareth any eyes, either, and I kind of like that different people see him looking different ways. Maybe I'll keep it that way.
Oh God, if there was a movie... no. It would be impossible to do that hair over and over. A-plus impossible. ;D

hmmmm well whatever happened with Jareth's eyes it just came the perfect way... magic? I wonder....
you are right!!! to animate that hair would be painful and would consume most of the film budget!!!! so sad

well done. I like the view point of the devil. according to some he is the prince of shadows (literally King Oberon's son), and very prone to making mortals strike bargains they may (or may not) live to regret.

Is it a crime to say that I haven't seen this movie yet?
I feel left out, but at least I know the characters and bits and pieces of the story and the film was done by Jim Hensen.
As far as sitting down to watch the flick, I haven't done that yet. I know, I should be ashamed of myself.
Once again, your work is beautiful. It's so crisp and clean and look, it's David Bowie! YAY!
Everything you do just screams brilliance! Well done! Now, I'm off to the video store to pick up a copy of Labyrinth.

You're welcome. Nice things are easier to stomach, that's why I only like to say nice things. Plus, you're art is just incredible!

The extras are worth it just for footage of Bowie and Jennifer Connelly in their costumes, practicing their ballroom dancing, laughing and smiling together. I clasp my hands in histrionic delight each time.
Somebody said to me, "If you get praised on everything you do, you'll never improve." Which, I guess I understand the theory, but I was like... I call bullshit. Praise bolsters your self-esteem and makes you want to do more, and the more you do, the better you get. Am I right?

StinaSketchbook In reply to lily-fox [2007-12-29 03:24:45 +0000 UTC]
I watched most of the extras and am indeed captivated and completely in awe over it all. I'm going to watch it over and over. I'm going to emerse myself into world of the Goblin King and get lost in the Labyrinth.
Yeah, that's true. So true. I think I've "improved" on my work somewhat. Although I do feel that there are some things, certain processes and how I approach things is what I'll call it, that I feel I need to change. But then again, those flaws and unproportionate views are what make my art mine. I think I'm going to stick with that.
Your art, as far as I've seen, is quite unique. I personally like how you incorporate that lovely art nouveau style in it as well. You don't see enough of that, especially on a day to day basis. It's got a classic flare but it still holds the elements of a modern age. Oooooo.
It's nice to see some David Bowie/Labyrinth art popping up in my deviants watch list, but just out of curiosity, whatever happened to Reginald and Alice?
Keep 'em coming! I can't wait for more!

lily-fox In reply to StinaSketchbook [2007-12-29 03:43:57 +0000 UTC]
I feel that way about a lot of my work; that there's a lot I want to change and improve. And if you want to, then you'll do it. The only thing there is to do is to draw all the time.
Thank you for saying such a nice thing. Every artist has a special style, and for so long I didn't feel like I had one. Little habits I have that I thought were junky turned out to be my little signature.
Reggie and Alice are enjoying their home life. But don't worry, I'm not finished with my Hatter25, and I can't leave that hanging. I just got suckerpunched by Bowie. I gots to roll with it!
