Description I know better than to read fanfiction, but it always gets me in the end. There's a good one, a Legion fanfic by The Noble Rot called Ghosts of Babylon , and it's a total heartwrecker. Shot me full of arrows. The story, basically, is that the angel Gabriel cares for this badly injured girl, saves her life, and sort of falls in love with her, which apparently upsets people in Heaven. She ends up raising cane (so to speak) and tries to plead his case before God (who is a dick), and it's all very fraught with emotion and full of the stuff that kills me.

A cursory glance around my gallery proves what a sucker I am for girl heroes, for strong men powerless in the face of their love for them. This is the girl, Audrey, wearing one of his feathers in her hair and holding him. She's not the most sympathetic character, but I'm impressed by her determination. She travels through Heaven and loses her shit with angels and does whatever it'll take to protect the person she loves. It makes me think of that beautiful tune, "You Will Be My Ain True Love".

you'll walk unscathed through musket fire
no ploughman's blade will cut thee down
no cutless wound will mark thy face
and you will be my ain true love

and as you walk through death's dark veil
the cannon's thunder can't prevail
and those who hunt thee down will fail
and you will be my ain true love

...aaand my Kevin Durand crush continues unabated. I'm finally getting that face, god dammit.

I listened to Ain True Love and the element of it absolutely fits this story, and then Lovely Bloodflow. While she was healing I listened to Fionn Regan's "Noah" first, admittedly, then Comptine d'un autre ete by Yann as she fell. Then that song on repeat nearly until I finished reading!

And I'm not sorry either, fanfiction or not, heartstrings have been pulled fantastically!

Oh wow, I didn't recognize Tiersen's name from the Amelie soundtrack! Wow. What different movies, but very fitting just the same. Sans toi, les Γ©motions d'aujourd'hui ne seraient que la peau morte des Γ©motions d'autrefois.

Aw, gee, Fionn Regan is sweet. Very lonely. Very nice. We should have a little mixtape party. C:

But yes. We shall have a wondrous mixtape party. While simultaneously having a Kevin Durand movie night...

Shit yes! You know what, my sister and I, every time we have a crush on one thing or another, we both end up making mixes for said crush. So far, I swear, the only song that really speaks Durand to me is a great tune by Asheru called "Soul!". Don't even know why. I like Asheru; he's got a softness and honesty about his rhymes without sacrificing power. Like K-Os in a good mood.

Oh my god! That's hilariously amazing; my younger sister and I sometimes do that too. I was newly smitten by Durand as I saw Robin Hood with friends, then watched Legion online with my brother not knowing he was in it within the span of a month-so I don't quite have a song for him yet. But I DO have one that sort of reminded me of Soul! and its chill rhythmic vibes. [link]

Oh, my sister's man just put the XX record in my iTunes. I'll have to give them a listen!

God, I loved him in Robin Hood. He was so funny and dear, and the one-two punch of graying temples and the Scottish brogue totally unraveled me. <3 Ugh. Smitten, indeed, is the word.

You know, a few hours ago I wasn't much of a fan of Legion, I appreciated the movie, but there is a difference between liking something and being a fan-- if you know what I mean.

Then I saw your art in my inbox, and after being mesmerized (yet again) by your stunning ability to capture faces and emotion on paper-- and recognizing Kevin Durand (yes please β™₯)-- I decided to investigate the fanfiction you were talking about.

I ended up spending the entire time between then and now glued to my chair when I should have been doing something else. I regret nothing by the way.

I wanted to thank you for referring me, it's an absolutely amazing story. I enjoy how she developed Audrey's character to be sinful to the point that it was somewhat distasteful, and yet something about her makes you feel for her; she seems more real. I also have a giant soft spot for Millie and Howard... and don't even get me started on what she did for Gabriel, it's heart-wrenching and makes you wish for the best for him. Delightful.

Your art captured their emotions beautifully, I could tell what they were feeling even before I read the story-- but now that I have, I know the emotions that fueled this piece of art and it makes it that much more enjoyable.

Because of you, Legion has a new fan β™₯

Wow... this comment is ridiculously long lol.

Thank you so much. You know... I'm still not a fan of Legion. ;D It's something of an attractive little trainwreck. But it had its careful moments, and it was a heck of a catalyst, clearly. Flowers growing from dirt and all that. Noble Rot really made something lovely.

Ha ha, I love that you got sucked into it, too. I was right in the middle, like twelve chapters in, and then we had that large-scale blackout for a day or two, so I had to sit around with all that angst running like venom in my brain. Maybe that's when I fell in love?

I'm so glad you like this. Sometimes, maybe most of the time, the work I put up is nice but innocuous. This one. I really felt something about this one. It's not getting attention like anything else I put up, but maybe that's a good thing. A good little secret.

No problem. I normally don't comment on people's art, but when someone makes me feel something I have to tell them.

I know what you mean by that flowers from dirt comment; I re-watched the movie yesterday and there were a few concepts and ideals that I liked, but I'm more interested in the door that the movie left open more than anything. Possibilities and all that.

Yea, angst and cliffhangers are my worst enemy, but they're strangely addicting... in moderation.

Aw, it just breaks my heart to see this. But in a wonderful way. I think I have a weakness for 'powerless in the face of love' as well. "The bigger they are, the harder they fall." really applies here!

The detail of the 'halo' around Audrey is so beautiful. Delicate, and for some reason reminiscent of apple or pomagrante seeds, but fierce with the little marks pointing outwards. Radiant. How you handle hair is very admirable as well. I -love- hair, so whenever I look at a picture featuring characters, I'm immediately drawn to look at the hair and how it's been drawn. For some odd reason, I really love the part in her hair. Because I'm odd like that. Even the fine hairs of the feather command a soft wilderness about them. While Gabriel's hair is tame and..well, I can't help but think of the imagery in the story where he compared carrying Audrey to carrying a lamb, where as here the roles are almost switched!

Plus I have to say, you're wonderfully adept at drawing Mr. Durand. Those features are nearly impossible to capture.

I like the set line of her mouth. There certainly needs to be more heroic girls out there...Although, maybe a little more easy to sympathize with.

lily-fox In reply to dieCorbeau [2011-03-10 02:12:33 +0000 UTC]

Thank you so much. I was really looking forward to hearing what you thought of this. I like to throw halos around girls when I feel like they deserve one, you know? And she's such a fierce little thing. Rise and rise again, until lambs become lions.

I know what you mean about well-drawn hair. I love drawing hair. It's relaxing and rewarding, because it always ends up looking lovely with like, zero effort. And you know what else is funny... I love drawing napes of necks. Just makes me want to plant a kiss there.

Heh. ^u^ Oh, Kevin. Took me a little while there, to start getting him, especially his age. I've never been good with faces older than, say, twenty-five? I'm done with boys, I declare.

I'm so glad you like this! And P.S., how's your story coming? C: Not to prod you, but. Prod.

Oh, necks. I love it when the head is turned, just so that one muscle stands out on the neck. Plus, adam apples.

Still working on it. I'm trying to keep my head above water, because I tend to love complicating plots more than they should be. I wasn't sure though if I gave the impression that I'm writing the crackfic, which I should poke at, but it's really another idea I'm peddling away at. I don't like giving false impressions. :< But this one will, predicably, be all about Gabriel.

Ha ha! Were you actually considering that crazy plotbunny, with Gabriel and Sita and Pele and everybody? Because I think I might love you forever if you did that. Holy crap. I would owe you. Ha! But no, certainly don't feel obligated.

Is this story something you feel like you can talk about yet? Do you know where it's basically going? Because I'm kind of fiending.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

dieCorbeau In reply to lily-fox [2011-03-10 02:59:51 +0000 UTC]

I got as far as pulling a multiverse before realizing I'd need to do some serious article reading for a crackfic. Kind of self-defeating of the term 'crackfic'. I could see it being an intermission while the head Gods of the pantheons pull God aside and having a word about 'treading on territorial toes'. Oh, alliteration.

I'd like to do some more mulling before spilling, it has this big...perhaps overly complicated...beginning to it, but I'd love the opportunity to get an opinion on it all. The longest...anything I've written was 10-11 straight pages of a beginning before I just summarized out the entire story and went 'WELP I FEEL LIKE I'M DONE'. -facepalm- I'll be darned into a sock if I let it happen again here.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

lily-fox In reply to dieCorbeau [2011-03-10 10:19:46 +0000 UTC]

Would research preclude a crackfic? (So a crackfic, by definition, is one that you just write on the fly to satisfy a bunny?) Shame, that. It'll have to run naked round my boundless imagination, I guess.

This story sounds pretty heavy already! I'm so looking forward to reading when you feel comfortable sharing. C:

I will tell you this much: the movie is terrible. It would have been a great comic book, but it's fair to outrageously bad, most of the time, except. Except for Gabriel. If you're interested in well written fiction, this one is really worth checking out.
