Description
Before I get started, I should probably explain. For the past few months, I have been a fan of as he does really good reviews of animated TV shows on youtube; Animated Atrocities is by far the most entertaining one - he has tackled many of the worst episodes of animated TV shows ranging from Spongebob, Family Guy, and even G3 MLP. He is definitely worth a watch...Then a few weeks ago, he submitted an Animated Atrocity Review that I found a bit odd; an Ed Edd n Eddy episode. While I knew that the show DEFINITELY had some duds - BIG ones at that - the particular episode wasn't one I believed to have deserved the Atrocity Treatment. In fact, the episode was one of my personal favorites; Sorry Wrong Ed.
The humor and slapstick in this episode is top-notch in my book, and somehow, the misery that Eddy is going through is surprisingly enjoyable. I do admit though, Double D is the one cement shoe that slows the episode down. But it doesn't mean the episode isn't still watchable and enjoyable.
My response to that review was that Mr. Enter should consider reviewing THIS particular episode. And while he may one day tackle it in the future, I understand that his workload is heavy right now; but that won't stop me from putting my thoughts on it. So I'm going to take a quick break and talk to you about one of my least favorite Ed Edd n Eddy episodes - The Good, the Bad and the Ed.
--
If you thought, "Sorry Wrong Ed" was an Eddy Torture Porn, then "The Good, the Bad, and the Ed" is a different beast all together; it is the tortures Eddy goes through from the former episode, only ten - hell - hundreds of times worse.
The episode starts off with the neighborhood kids doing their chores. The Urban Rangers show up and try to enlist new recruits. Anyone who knows the show knows about these guys and how Eddy failed to join their club before and failed - and now has a strong dislike to them - so I won't go into much detail.
Here's the flaw I see in this episodes logic to begin with. Rolfe, Jimmy and Johnny try to encourage people to sign up for the Urban Rangers...by doing all their chores for them. Okay -
1; you guys are flat out promoting that new Urban Ranger recruits will be required to do chores for other people with no charge for their services.
And 2; why would anybody join now that their chores have been done for them? Seriously; what is the appeal? That they did it so efficiently?
So they set up an Information Kiosk to hand out Pamphlets for the Urban Rangers. Eddy is given one by Double D, and Eddy promptly rips it up and deposits it before Rolfe. Now...a lot of you guys might think that was rude - it kind of is - and justifies the abuse Eddy gets in this episode...But lets think about it;
1; Eddy was under no obligation to try and join anyway - so throwing the pamphlet away was inevitable at some point.
2; Eddy didn't even ask for the Pamphlet.
3; Rolfe wasn't going to let Eddy join even if he did try to sign up. Their rivalry is still strong enough for neither group wanting anything to do with each other.
What Eddy did amounts to nothing more than a simple rejection; and apparently that's the worst thing anyone can do, because Rolfe is the one who instigates it. Despite Eddy having literally no chance of joining the Urban Rangers, Rolfe starts taunting Eddy about the Rangers being too tough for him...because his head is flat like a side table. Yeah, Rolfe's taunts barely make much sense to begin with.
So - humiliated by Rolfe's taunts, Eddy challenges Rolfe to the Toughest Badge that the Urban Rangers have to offer - the very mention of said badge, has Jimmy AND Rolfe cringing with Fear. The "Hairy Chest of Resilience" Badge; the ultimate Urban Ranger Badge that proves a Man's Manly Toughness; the challenges to acquire said badge are so difficult that No one has Earned that Badge in over 50 Years...
...Um...are you seriously implying that the Urban Rangers have been an established Community Club that has been around for over 50 Years? Okay...No. That right there, is just not true. If anything, the Urban Rangers and their arbitrary guidelines are made up completely by Rolfe. Why? Simple -
1; If the Urban Rangers had been around for more than 50 Years, then Rolfe would want nothing to do with them, as he wouldn't be able to understand their "Urbanized" Lifestyle and Goals.
2; Rolfe clearly created the Urban Rangers as a means of Learning how to adapt to an Urban Environment; yet the Rangers do things that mostly a small Rural community would be known for.
3; Are you seriously trying to tell me that there is a group of Adults who Monitor and Provide Rolfe with all of their Uniforms, Equipment, Badges, fliers and pamphlets and Trifolds? Then why do they look so cheaply made and incredibly tacky?
Seeing Rolfe's fear of the Badge's very name, Eddy taunts him. So now, it's Rolfe who has been pushed over the edge and accepts Eddy's Challenge. So basically, this entire plot has been motivated completely by Hubris. Both characters have huge egos and think that no one and nothing should ever bring them down a peg.
Double D tries to talk Eddy out of it, by telling him that Rolfe has him outclassed in every Category. Naturally, Eddy is too stubborn to back down. And this is one thing I grew to like about the episode. Eddy may be stubborn, but when the Challenges actually get going, his resilience and desire to see the challenge through to the end, despite what he's been through, is actually quite admirable. Which makes the ending that much worse; but we'll get to that.
The first challenge starts off with "The Wax of Wailing." Both contenders must have the hair off their legs waxed - as in painfully ripped off of their skin, without making so much as a peep or murmur of discomfort. Rolfe goes first; the hair ripped from his leg causes his skin to boil and pop - considering that the Cringe Inducing Visuals meter on this episode is so high, this is actually pretty tame, but don't worry; it gets worse.
Eddy takes his turn and the hair ripped from his leg...causes his entire leg to swell into one gigantic pulsing boil. My god that's disgusting. Surprisingly, Eddy doesn't make a sound, and despite seeing tears in his eyes, his resolve is impressive if nothing else. But what really irritates me is that, Eddy has clearly met the challenge, and Rolfe continues to taunt him; Rolfe, the Trashtalking is supposed to come BEFORE the event and is used to make someone believe they can't accomplish it. Not AFTER the event when they already succeeded.
Both contenders move onto the next challenge, "The Bumping of the Funny Bone." Both contestants are restrained to a revolving chair, where they will have their elbows forcibly banged against the side of a cabinet or wardrobe - Once again, they must endure this without making a single sound. The Game begins and both are subjected to the painful task, Eddy not making a sound. Rolfe on the other hand, demands that Johnny try harder...Now...this is interesting because of what Rolfe says;
"Don't make me come up there, Woodboy!"
That could EASILY Be misconstrued as a command for Johnny to stop. By all accounts, that could've easily disqualified Rolfe from the entire challenge. But it didn't.
The next few challenges are the ones that make me cringe the most, and are really the reason for the Cringe-Inducing Visuals levels being so high on this episode. But first, I'd like to point out something that is wrong with this entire challenge; so far, there is absolutely NO scoring system. There's no judgement that places Rolfe in the lead over Eddy in the challenges. The Game is, if you Survive the Challenge, you get to move on; not based on how resilience you show, but if you manage to meet the challenge. It's basically like the Triwizard Tournament from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire; you could come in Last Place at the Black Lake, and STILL win the Tournament in the Maze.
The next two challenges involve Eddy and Rolfe navigating through a thorny bush, in nothing but their Birthday Suit. You heard that right folks. This challenge involves the two of them going through a bush of thorns, completely naked. And it clearly doesn't matter that Rolfe went first and Eddy didn't; both of them do the challenge and get to move on, Rolfe warning that the worst test has yet to come...
Y'know, if there's one thing I know about Rolfe from the show, is that he can at least recognize and acknowledge when someone - even Eddy - has done something impressive. I actually expected Rolfe to somewhat be the least bit impressed, or show Eddy some respect that he has come this far without giving up.
The next one features them dangling from the swingset between three large boulders; EEYUP, they are now pieces in a Giant Executive Desk Toy. Y'know...I really would like to know the Guidelines for these challenges; who or what decides how long they go on for? In fact; who is the Masochist who came up with these challenges?
Good god, every single time I hear that boulder crash, I can just imagine Eddy's ribcage being crushed.
After both pass this one, they move onto the final one. And here's what sticks me; Jimmy admits that BOTH have done well. That is the ONLY validation that Eddy receives for the misery he goes through. But it shows me that the kids are capable of recognizing it, and only wish to ignore it.
And here we are...The Tour of Tears. Both Contestants must stand on a Divingboard overlooking a cliff. Rolfe of course has his proud reserved stance, while Eddy understandably cowers in nervousness. The two then dive (or in Eddy's case - fall) off their boards, down into a water tower, dumped onto a train track, where The "Urban Ranger Train" hits them, runs them over, sends them careening down the rail road tracks where they finally crash into a couch tied to some ropes.
Eddy: "Did I win yet?"
Rolfe: "........No..."
The ropes restraining the couch are untied, catapulting the two contestants up into the air, where they land in the construction site, both making a cartoon body-shaped crater upon impact. And...Despite how gruesomely torturous all of this has been...it is NOTHING...compared to what we're about to see.
We see Eddy waking up to find his arms and legs in casts; this looks about the Worst Shape Eddy has been in throughout the entire series. And...What exactly happened now that the Challenges are over?
Double D: "Well um...You...Passed Out...One second before Rolfe Eddy. So, Rolfe won by default."
...Really? One Second? Huh...Did it ever occur to anyone that ROLFE PASSED OUT TOO?! Did anyone think to consider that everything that these two went through EQUALLY SHOULD'VE Killed them? Do they honestly think that it matters at this point who passed out first? And all because of One Lousy Second?!
We see Rolfe in similar condition to Eddy, receiving the Hairy Chest of Resilience Badge. And wow, even when he's being admired by the other children, he still acts like a complete jerk to them. What really frustrates me, is the fact that Eddy went through all of that for nothing; You'd think that someone who could at the very least SURVIVE the Challenge - that no one has even survived in 50 years - would be given some kind of Consolation Prize, or Runner Up Badge.
Ed: "Be Sad Not Eddy - you won a badge too."
Wait? Really? He gets a Second-Place Badge? Well isn't that Swell. It might not be #1, but at least he gets some kind of trophy to commemorate the accomplishment that he's done, that I guarantee no one else in this show would -
Ed: "The Crybaby-Boo-Hoo Badge."
...What? Are you serious? Do you people have ANY idea what Eddy went through? Are you seriously demoralizing and humiliating Eddy EVEN FURTHER after all of that?! Eddy did exactly what Rolfe did, was in the exact same pain, met ALL the challenges...And you give him a Crybaby Badge all because he Passed out at the Last Second?!
This basically confirms why the Urban Rangers were invented by Rolfe; because no established Organization would be SO Goddamn Juvenile! Let's think about the past 50 years of no one being able to achieve the Badge; probably being killed while doing so...Do you really think that Grown Men Rangers doing these challenges deserve a Badge that calls them a Crybaby? Do you think that they would do something SO cruel to the challengers?!
It's like giving a Soldier who was Shot during a War, a "Whiny Pussy Badge" just because he passed out from the pain, or lost too much blood. Ugh...
I hate this episode. The simple fact is, the episode has our two main characters doing something stupid, that they know is stupid, but are too prideful to give up doing it...If that's what they're trying to do, and establish that doing something stupid can cause you pain and very little reward...THEN WHY WAS ROLFE REWARDED IN THE END?! If neither one of them could receive the Badge, and be forced to shake hands and admit a draw or something, THEN the episode would be descent. But no, that would be smart. This episode is just an Eddy Torture Porn, simply because Eddy refused the offer to join the Urban Rangers.

Usually, the Eds (more likely Eddy) do something to deserve their punishments. This one took it too far.

Along with If It Smells Like an Ed, A Town Called Ed, etc., The Good, The Bad, and The Ed is really one of my least favorite Ed, Edd n' Eddy episodes of all time! That is the perfect example of Eddy getting both emotionally and physically abused!

I think If It Smells Like an Ed is my all time least favorite. And it's the episode that showcases one of the main problems I have with the show, and that is, "Guilt by Association."
More often than not, when Eddy (and sometimes Ed) act up, Double D gets punished simply for being his friend; which isn't fair. The episode clearly demonstrates that Double D was in no way involved with what happened to Jimmy, and yet Jimmy took revenge on him anyway.
And of course, the unfortunate implications of the episode that are - if you are a sociopath who frames people for crimes you committed for Revenge...you're going to get away with it, with no consequences. Seriously, the fact that Jimmy never gets found out for what he did (although I doubt the other kids would have a problem with it anyway) really pisses me off.
And what's worse, he was technically setting up Rolf to be the fall-guy.

Guilty by association may have been a problem in one episode but I wouldn't say it was an ongoing problem in the show

Actually, it was; there were several episodes (mostly involving Sarah or Kevin) where Double D and Ed were beaten up because of something that Eddy did - even when it was obvious that Eddy was the only one guilty.
Also; I get you might have a passion, but why are you going around replying to everyone's comments here?

They go after all of them because Ed and Double D are still part of the scams they make not just Eddy so it makes sense to go after them. He's the idea guy but the others also help form the scams.
Also I'm just replying to people. What's the big deal?

I think the underlying problem is that the other kids wouldn't care as long as "Dork, Dorkk, 'n' Dorkky" get what's apparently coming to them. They're not afraid of pulling Disproportionate Retribution out of their asses just for their own shallow mentalities, I know that much.

Exactly; that is my BIGGEST peeve with this episode. Eddy and Rolfe go through the EXACT same thing: the same physical pain at the same physical level. You'd think that some of them would be impressed that Eddy was able to take it like a man.
But nope - for the Unforgivable Crime of passing out ONE Second BEFORE Rolfe did, Eddy gets Branded a Wussy Cry-Baby.
Stuff like that just irks me.
