Three layers actually. Open to half-closed to closed. It makes the animation look smoother and sometimes people add more for a more detailed animation.

i didnt know you could make simple animations with photoshop and gimp~! :3
but now i have to figure out how to do it with gimp.

Yes photoshop is very expensive but don't worry the steps are very similar in GIMP so there shouldn't be too much confusion.
