Description Elegant Metal Tutorial Copyright Β© 2013 LlemonFlame a.k.a. Dorte Andersen

License: Personal use only. You're free to use this tutorial as you wish, as long as it's for personal use only. Do not sell the layer effect styles, and the Metal Effect Contour from this tutorial. The rest is yours to do with as you please.
If you're interested in buying a license for commercial use of the layer effect styles, let me know.

I wanted to do something different from other metal text tutorials, I wanted to make a layer effect style which looks best using thin, detailed and elegant looking fonts, using text layer effect styles without use of pattern overlay.
In This Photoshop tutorial you will learn how to make a metal effect using different layer effect styles, the contour editor, the gradient editor, the brush tool and the path tool.

Download to get it in the real size.

Enjoy!

I know you can script things in Photoshop to use in CSS for instance, but that's a whole different area.

Yeah it is.

Fair point - I don't think you can copyright a group of settings on a program you don't own, just the tutorial itself.

Still, really pretty effect - it certainly lives up to the "Elegant Metal" name! I'll have to see if I can recreate this effect in GIMP sometime.

That leaves the question how people can sell Layer effects? Surely they can't sell something they don't own then?

Thank you, I hope you do.

Exactly to your fair point. If they wanted to gain money from the tutrial they should have charged for download.

I was looking it up on a couple legal sites and it said while someone can claim copyright (I mean you can really try) the copyright is not supported because this would be a method. Methods aren't protected by actual copyright laws.

This is a really pretty affect, but no offence the the artist I have seem similar tutorials around. So if they really wanted to try to charge for the usage I would just look up another tutorial. ((And I say Similar, but not the same. The methods differ a little, but the outcome is very similar.))

I did not put this tutorial together for money. Oh and if people can't claim copyright to Layer effects in Photoshop, I guess that the people selling them can't claim their copyright either???

And I did write this tutorial myself, and have the photoshop files to prove it too. I'm sure there are a million other ways to get the same result as I have, and I say go for it -- as I wrote in reply on your page, I did this to teach people how they can create layer effects (and stars etc.).

Well if you are asking if photoshop can claim copyrights they can because they scripted the whole thing. That is why you pay for the software.

I wasn't saying you didn't do it yourself. I was just mentioning that it was similar. That doesn't mean the same or stolen.

PS: I mean selling the painting itself, not the brush of course because that is Adobe's obviously. It's getting late here, time for me to sleep. Interesting discussion.

The painting actually becomes theirs since they paid for the use of the program itself. This is really difficult to explain because in truth I'm not any type of lawyer. I just know what I read.

I pay for Photoshop as well, and I would really like to see some links for sites that back up your theory, because I'm not convinced at all. I think you've misunderstood the whole thing.

No I haven't. It clearly states you can't copyright at a method of doing something. If you want to look it up do so, but you commented to my journal and it has a link in there.

But then how can anyone sell anything they made in Photoshop, if someone makes a painting using one of the brushes that comes with Photoshop (and they pay for the use of the program naturally) and then sell it, then Adobe can claim it because that person made use of one of their brushes?

They can sell that because it becomes physical, but they can't sell the method in which they did it.

That sounds very unlikely and very vague.

Yeah well take it up with how things are written. I guess they can sell the product because they created it, but they can't sell the method to the product.

Thank you for noticing! I took quite some time to write, much longer than I'd anticipated -- of course my computer crashing in the middle of everything didn't make it any easier...

Best wishes,

Oh no! That sucks Did you lose everything you had written up until that point?

LlemonFlame In reply to TehAngelsCry [2013-04-29 20:07:35 +0000 UTC]

I only lost a few words, since I always save what I'm working on whenever I make a slight change (I've learned that lesson the hard way!) and fortunately I noticed my computer was starting to act weird and got everything backed up in the nick of time, whew!

The tutorial was almost done, then all of a sudden I had a lot of exams coming, and life got in the way of reinstalling Photoshop.. until this past weekend.

TehAngelsCry In reply to LlemonFlame [2013-04-29 21:35:33 +0000 UTC]

That's lucky then! Yeah I've had a lot of work in lately, and I have two exams coming up... but then I'm finally free! XD

LlemonFlame In reply to TehAngelsCry [2013-04-30 06:03:34 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I highly recommend using backup up every single day! I have exams coming up too, summer holiday can’t come soon enough.

Take care!

Oh I do backup every day, heck, every 5 seconds sometimes xP
