Alas the smudge brush didn't smudge. o.o I set the settings exactly as you did but for some reason instead of "Color blending, opacity mix, persistence" mine says "blending, dilution, persistence." I just guessed it was the same thing and put all of the settings the same. But it didn't smudge. :l This tutorial was excellent though!

Thank you! and this tutorial is very old, i should update a new version when i have the time. may i see a screenshot of your brush and brush settings please? People with Sai may have different english encoding and that is why some settings may be named something completely different

sorry for the uber late reply. I'm not as active on DeviantArt as I used to be. Anyways your Smoothing Prs setting is the only drastic difference that I see. I made this tutorial long time ago so I don't remember if I changed anything in the advanced settings, but I think the Smoothing Prs is the only problem. either that or Sai might be a little glitchy and just needs to restart. Also the Sai smudge brush smudges okay, but not as effective as photoshop's smudge brush so if you want you could open it up in Photoshop for the smudging portion.

What version of Sai do you have? There should be 8 layer blending options (not in order):
-normal
-multiply
-overlay
-screen
-addition (or luminosity. it depends on your translation)
-shade
-lumi and shade
-binary

when trying to recreate the smudge tool, I did all the settings except for one that seemed to be missing, underneath "keep opacity" I didn't have something called "smooth prs" like your images shows, it just goes straight to the advance options..? also there was no water droplet underneath the brush icon and there isn't on the water brush either... do I have an outdated version? o.o Β i44.tinypic.com/16m9a2w.jpg the tool seemed to have no effect

Vivi-kiramaru-sama19 In reply to Hannah66665 [2013-08-07 05:38:56 +0000 UTC]
That "smoothing prs" option is only available to the brushes with the mini water droplet icon. Your version is ok, you just need to make a new WATER brush. WATER brushes have slightly different settings than a normal brush (sorry if the caps seem like yelling. I just need to emphasize lol)
On the tool palette, right click on an empty spot to create a new WATER brush (may be called "Water colour") and you can create and customize new brushes. Hope it helps!

Vivi-kiramaru-sama19 In reply to MeChan2669 [2013-02-24 06:27:49 +0000 UTC]
Sorry for the late reply. You have to duplicate a brush and then customize the settings yourself. In the tutorial is a screencap of what to change

The overlay won't work like in the tutorial; it doesn't stay in the parts I've drawn (like using a clipping mask). Any advice?

OH MY GOSH IM SORRY FOR THE SUPER LATE REPLY ;A; and the overlay should
work. It depends on your english translation of sai if you have the not so legal version
