Do you have the message menu splintered? Then it won't work (yet).
What kind of error do you get?

It might be nice to be able to click on the messages icon and go to your message center. Currently it takes you to this deviation page. Just a suggestion.

What? It shouldn't!
The algorithm is to open a new message center page if there is non or focus on and refresh an existing one if there is.
Are you sure you're not viewing this page from an URL starting with message center address?

I closed my dA tab and then clicked on the icon and it took me to my message center. I originally started at the deviation page, and it took me back to the first page of comments.

Sorry, no. First, I won't invade om devAny's turf, second, it's a non-trivial task to port extensions across browsers. It's more like rewriting it from scratch. I'd rather focus on a new version for Chrome..
