Description
One of my goals in posting to deviantart is to help show that more can be done with 3D rendering than what most people think of.This scene is a 3D render using the Firefly render engine in Poser7. The material nodes were a result of a happy error. This was not the effect I was going for originally, but the shaders make an almost painted look that I really like.
As for the scene...
I haven't figured out if she is a heroine or a female villain. Either way, don't get on her bad side.
Response to this piece will determine if I spend effort developing this style further or not.

Very cool. Are you willing to share your node settings? Again, great image.

Except for the hair, it all looks VERY... painted.
I find this style of rendering very, VERY impressive.

VERY GOOD +fav
I'm not sure if you've seen the Appleseed movies or not, but I think you could take some major tips from their 3d animation work.
You could definitely pull off great works such as those with a little practice. Perhaps even expand into areas of finesse in motion, or detailing that they missed.

The shading on the hair is especially good looking; how would the image look if you use the same shaders and settings for the skin? A brighter effect might look particularly good, if it could be done without washing out the skin texture.

She glistened the field of battle with a grimace that seemed only to drive her deeper as the flames began to spur all around. The pyres were blazing out of control steel was clashing; only the sound of iron and screaming were being heard. Out of no where a lowly scout began to cry out only to be cut off "the shield maiden shes..." "Ignorant vassal i am your destruction not some lowly warrior" Suddently the battle field began to die out the pyres which seemed to light the heavens themselves began to fade, the screams of battle began to turn to woes of dispair and pain. She began her long treck back through the battle field Slowly her blade began to glow a deep shade of crimson and it began to cry out as it slowly absorbed the blood and cries of the fallen only to further corrupt her power as she whispered gently "how much longer might i stand this corruption of my soul to save my people..."
Hows that?

I'm amazed at this. it looks just like the high end cel-shading that you see in appleseed movies or in some computer games.

I was trying to use the skin shader with toon nodes to get better edge effects. It wasn't working. In frustration, I just started connecting the sheen part of the skin node to different places when the shading suddenly inverted and went flat. Caught me completely by surprise. It was a happy error though.

very cool. it's tricky to get a flat shading with good edging out of that rendering engine.
detailed documentation on poser's shader nodes is scarce.

Max using Firefly?!!?? But seriously now, I like it a lot, especially the dress and the boots.

I know! Will wonders never cease? I thought I would never be using Firefly again. I suspect I could replicate this effect in Megapov, but it would take a lot of work.......

most interesting effects for the cloth. i concur with ken1171 that it does appear to work better with cloth than skin. don't let that deter you in investigating further.

I also came out with some great shaders out of accidents with a happy ending. This one looks better on cloth than it does on skin, or maybe it's the lighting you used.

Nah, Not the lighting, it's the shader. I like it and I don't like it. It has a very vector kind of feel to it. Changing it just makes things look way out of place though.

I like the vector-like gradient effect on the clothing, but on skin it seems to leave dark areas at the wrong places. I imagine this could be controllable by lighting? For instance, I could never render decent dynamic hair in my gallery because it looks horrible, but last night I found out that all I had to do was to make it invisible to the raytracer and render with mapped shadows instead --> [link] In the end it was all about how to light it, not so much how to shade it.

As with all new things, it takes time to learn. I am wondering how it would look if I inverted the shading tones.....

That's what I was thinking: invert the shading tones, but just for the skin. That might do the trick!

VERY interesting! I DO like that painterly effect. It's moody and artistic. What more can you ask from ANY shader node? I like the Clamp style meets METH you did here,BTW. Most kick-ass.
