Description This piece wasn't meant to be serious in any capacity. However, I've been so excited about this project I wanted to share it with everyone. This scene is the result of the forest generator code I've been working on. I'm very happy with the results so far. These scenes are quite complex and take some time to render!
I hope to eventually add terain variations and the ability to specify clearings and/or foliage maps.

Scene was rendered in Povray 3.6. This scene contains ~5000 plants and took about 18 hours to render.

The first forest scene I attempted to render is still running and will probably set some all-time personal records for the longest render I've ever done.

Five thousand plants ?? Whoa!

Is this the Golmore jungle ?

Shall we look forward to a couple of Viera in their native habitat ?

Nope, this piece was made a *long* time before FFXII came to the states.

very cool the code seems to do a great job of grouping undergrowth in a very natural way - if it's not intentional, it's sure a nice accident

Nope, it's not entirely random.

It is a fractal like algorithm that continues to pack in smaller and smaller plants around the larger ones. I haven't worked out how to get the smaller plants closer to the tree roots yet.

Looks pretty good and different, in the sense that I could not identify the trees from any veggie generator proggy I know of.
So you created one tree and then scattered/rotated it over the terrain? That would save a lot of memory because POVRay would only keep 1 tree in memory. ^^
Awesome job and good to see people are still using POVRay after all these years. ^_^

Bingo! The code just generate the type, position, and location. All the objects are loaded into memory just once.

I wish Poser would do that too, since if I use 10 Aikos like different characters, it should keep only one in memory...
This alone would probably fix half of Poser's memory problems.

This is really amazing. You're a genius, aren't you? Does your code make all these plants? You ever post on the POV-Ray newsgroups? I bet they'd LOVE this one! Its very impressive.

Nope, it doesn't make the plants. It only selects them from a database. (Although, I always had a dream of using Lparser to make the plants....)

Lparser - looks pretty wild... would make a really weird forest.

VVVVVVVVVVvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvery nice, indeed.

Love it.

Now if only some a genius at Intel, or some supposed "advanced" processor chip manufactor could develope a chip to render this in .5 micro-seconds, then I'd be truly impressed with our so called "high tech" computers...

Until then...we are slaves to the machine.

Again, spectacular work.

That looks really good I experimented with pov-ray many moons ago, but never really got beyond the sphere over plane stage... I have little patience for 18 hour renders, but then again I guess poser would probably take 18 years

oooooo I'm pretty sure poser couldn't even render this.

nice work what is this povray you talk of? i gather it is some kind of render engine, but i am clueless, i like the thought of using a generator, would really give a random edge to pictures great job
