In a sequel, a man dreamt that HE was the tentacle-faced tram conductor, and when he shouted himself awake, he found a tram conductor's hat on the bed with him !
According to Robert Price ,half the story was a forgery.

Lovecraft had his "Commonplace Book" where he jotted down short descriptions of strange ideas. I'll bet a few of those came from his dreams.

I remember both the dream-fragment and the story derived from it. Pretty effective and surreal creepy imagery here.

It's really strange stuff. The short story did expand the dream scenario quite a bit, though it kept the general ambiance and language of a Lovecraft tale.
