those three pupils in each eye of the thing are the coolest, i guess it's some kind of shaepshifting parasite or virus.

It was a shapeshifter, yes; and one of the coolest in SciFi.

Was it described like this in the original story or were you influenced by the Barlowe illustration?

As I remember it, this it pretty much how the head was described: Three-eyed, with a orifice-like mouth and worm like "hair".

That's the horror film that inspired The Thing from Another World and The Thing from John Carpenter, which was more faithful to the book.

You mean horror story?Β
Yes, Carpenter sure made the most of this story and kept the original tale's suffocating feeling of claustrophibia and paranoia.

Yep, I mean The Thing by John Carpenter was more faithful to the novella WhoΒ Goes There. Like I taking place in Antartica and the alien being a virus that turns whatever they touch into horrible monstrosities.

the thing is one of my favorite horror films i like the idea of an alien microbe that can take over and organism wearing a flawless disguise then transforming into hideous monsters one of my favorite movie monsters along with pumpkinhead and werewolves :3

It's the notion that anybody can be the monster, and I guess "the monster is now us" that makes the story so effective.

"Yeah, fuck you too" is all that comes to mind.

Yep. I always imagine the moster defiantly going up in smoke at the end of the tale.

Yes! Finally a fan art based on the story's description of the thing and not one of the various movie portrayals.

I have always wanted to read the original story of this. Sadly though I just keep putting that off. I am a huge fan of the movies though You did a really awesome job here though. The three pupils in each eye is really just the stuff of nightmares >_<

It's not a long read, and well worth the effort.

Thank you! A pity it hasn't been artistically depicted that often.

Good job too, it looks very unearthly and sinister, HPL would approve.

Please do. It still packs a punch, and if you've seen John Carpenter's "The Thing" you'll recognize a lot of stuff.
