thank you for this beautiful tutorial if you don't mind me asking,i use watercolour tubes..sometimes when i paint the paper looks like it starting to peel off.. it is because of the paper or am applying too much water?

mhh, what kind of paper do you use? Is it watercolor paper? Because the peeling off effect usually happens on normal/smooth paper. If you use watercolor paper though, it might be because the paper is low quality, or maybe because you're painting on the same spot too much. It's hard to tell.

Wow. I've never tried ANY of this stuff because I'm very new to watercolor techniques, and this was so easy to follow and understand. Thanks so much for your tutorial, and your work is incredibly beautiful. Also, I don't know if you're in the network, but LOTS of people are posting this on Pinterest, you're getting a ton of exposure on the site for this tutorial and your works!
And I think the tape you most likely would want is (as Americans call it) painter's tape, appropriately enough It's very much like masking tape, like katelynna10000 suggested, but it's got an even less strong adhesive so it won't grip the finer particles of paper and almost never "truly" sticks- very good for keeping paper intact. Used for painting walls and such because it won't damage previous layers of paint

wow such an amazing tutorial and has helped me heaps. However, I'm really struggling with mixing skin color and always ruin my whole painting because of it any tips at all? like what colours you use?
Thank you for such a great tut

Loonaki In reply to d0gwalker [2013-03-29 10:13:53 +0000 UTC]
I often use a mix of light yellows/browns and pastel reds or light pinks to mix a light skin color (of course it depends on what skin color you actually want to mix). So for white skin I mostly use a mix of Ecoline colors ('cause Ecolines are pretty much all I use, but this works with any watercolor) called Pastel Red and Yellow Ochre and sometimes a hint of grey to tone down the brightness. For darker skin just gradually add more browns. I mean, it's just a matter of trying it out, really. There's not an "only way" to do it. I hope this helped a little.

By far the best tutorial I've seen...and I've been looking and looking! I don't want to watch a video it takes too long and I have to watch stuff I don't need. This is perfect. Very well done especially if it took extra time to use English.

Question - how do you un-mask the masking fluid?

Rub it off either with an eraser (I prefer that) or with your finger.

yes, normal table salt. Sometimes bigger grained sea salt.

what would be the difference of using regular paper instead of watercolor paper? :0
because i don't have any watercolor paper as of the moment and i want to know if it will make a big change and affect my painting ' o ' and if it does, i'll know now i have to buy it!

Loonaki In reply to mugcake [2013-01-22 10:03:43 +0000 UTC]
Well there are big differences in painting on normal and painting on watercolor paper. First of all normal paper isn't made to cope with that much water, which results in it getting really wavy and a rougher surface. Also watercolor doesn't mix as well on normal paper and is harder to blend. So I'd always recommend using watercolors on watercolor paper, just because you will have less of a struggle with it. It is however possible to paint on normal paper. For example this one: [link] was painted on normal (although slightly thicker) paper. It gives other effects and is quite a pain to paint on.
So I'd say it's worth buying watercolor paper. If you're a beginner you don't have to buy the most expensive one, though.

I typically just draw with pencil or charcoal. You've inspired me to not be afraid of color and to try to paint. At the very least, I'll share this with my housemate who uses watercolours. Thank you!

I'm using Copic Multiliners in black and sepia. The thinnest size I own is 0.03, but mostly I use 0.05 and 0.1
