The first of 4 Modesty covers for me this year with a closer view of Modesty thrown in for good measure...the issue just hit the streets so it should be okay to post the artwork.Pencil sketch, painted in photoshop.

Agreed - we need an immodest amount of modesty! My favourite 'pulp' action hero!

pulp !!
wash your mouth out lol
i grew up on Peter O'Donnell's Books,
my Dad loved them and gave them to me (like Heinlien and a few others)and said read them.
The rest as they say is history...
i also cheated a bit - pretended i was 'willy' so instead of it being willy who was Modesty's assistant it was yup you guessed it Stephen lol lol.
one of these days you need to do that one of her in scuba gear *pokes you playfully* as we discussed ages ago before..
thanks for everything
your efforts in sharing everything you do are most appreciated !!

I think there is a woman in the picture too, but my eyes never leave the sword hilt either

I'll bet that sword guard took as long as the rest of the picture combined...
You've gotten me very intrigued by Modesty...just saw that Bud Plant has a collection that I might have to pick up.

Pretty close to being on the money there!
I knew Modesty from the series of paperback novels by the characters creator and only got into the comic strips more recently. Still think I prefer the novels myself - no matter how clever the writer or artist is, there are some inherent shortcomings with a format that is made up entirely of three panels daily in a newspaper. Just dont watch the old Terrance Stamp Modesty movie from the late 60's - watched it recently and it almost made me cry what they did to the character.

Hmm... Unless you have Egmont in Australia as well this is probably for the Swedish magazine right?
Personally I wish they would stop reprinting Modesty in infinity but it's not much they can do with the limited theme of the magazine and there not being many newer detective or espionage strips they can get for cheap.
It's a cool cover though. Keep it up!

Cheers! It is indeed for the Swedish Magazine. I'd love to see some new Modesty stuff myself, but not sure who I'd want to draw it... the bar has been set pretty high, and I'd be afraid they'd make a mess of it.

It depends if there is a Modesty revival in Italy because the Swedish editorial sure don't have the money to produce their own content.
I wouldn't mind getting a crack at the Phantom though. If not only because you get to draw jungles, pirates and face punching.

What a beauty Dave! It's funny...I only knew of Modesty as a "film character" as portrayed by Monica Vitti in a film with Terence Stamp for the longest time, then I discovered the comics and thru talented individuals like yourself, makes me want to explore Modesty even more.Wow!

That film was bloody awful and probably helped bring about Modesetys decline as a comic heroine; read the books by Peter O'Donnell, Sabre Tooth is one of my favourites; Modesty Blaise has been sadly neglected for too long.

Ouch!I am sure to do that, even more so now with Daves work here intriguing me.Yeah,I have a feeling that film was quickly put together to cash in on the spy craze of the 60s if not batmania do in no small part to the campy tv show of the times.I am browsing for that book even now, thanks for the tip!

Glad I can get someone new to check out the comics and/or books!

Modesty Blaise was/is one of the great female heroine characters as seen in Peter O'Donnells books and in the wonderful comic strip which ran throughout the 60/70s; unfortunately, this gorgeous heroine is largely ignored today but youve brought her back to stunning life! I hope there is more Modesty to come, Id love to see her fighting in one of your pics, and hopefully using her famous "clincher" trick to bamboozle her enemy!

The editor has asked for an action type pose for an upcoming cover, so I'll post that when its published. Not sure if the 'nailer' is appropriate for a cover though
Cheers mate!

redmanxthered In reply to Loopydave [2011-06-28 22:10:54 +0000 UTC]
In the books there was no really graphic detail concerning Modesty and sex and though she was often stripped to her bra and panties, most of the rest was left to the readers imagination with just a few hints to nudge the creative cells along, lol. Its been a while since I read the books hence me calling Modestys "nailer" the "clincher."
