Description Have had quite a few requests for tutorials, but haven't really had the time to do a proper one - this little step by step of a single character from a cover done a few years back will have to do for the moment. Did a series of concept sketches - the client ended up wanting a naked charlies angel kind of vibe and this the process I used to paint the middle character.

A couple questions if you don't mind:
1) how many layers do you use on typical picture?
2) how do you start picking your color scheme and palette? Do you (or did you when you started out) sample from real picture, or just use your own eye? What other tips on your personal color theory?

I really like digital painting, and am only just starting out, but my main problems are that the pictures don't really look integrated. I think it is probably that I'm using too many layers, and picking colors too randomly, so any quick tips on those topics would be greatly appreciated!

1. Number of layers really vary a lot. I usually like to keep the foreground and background on separate layers which gives me the option to reuse my painting on a different background and its quite handy to have things like a shirt, hair etc on separate layers so you can play with the colours separately. Occasionally I paint everything on one layer just for the fun of it… and other times I have over a hundred layers. Play around and find whatever works for you!

2. Picking a colour palette. I usually have a pretty good idea in my head of what I want, eyeball colours from various places and it also tends to evolve as I work along. I tend to limit my palette - usually a few dominant colours with tints of others within. Too many colours can get unmanageable and you lose that integration you were talking about. My own 'colour theory' is pretty basic - limit the colours and play around with opposites.

Hope that is some help and happy painting!

Got to get a lot faster, dont I!
The full cover had three figures in it and the whole thing took me around 3 weeks to paint. Yup, I'm not fast enough!

Ok so I start sifting through the mountain of comments to find this out but after 6 pages I decided to just ask! lol

Did you use any reference for the original pencils or even then painting? Your tones and anatomy etc are all amazing from the get go! I'd love to see hear some more of your thoughts on colour selection etc if you ever get time for another!

I need to practice WAY more. Thanks for this piece!

Every step a masterpice... I' like the first colorstep...

imho the panties look like some cencorship-guy painted it over your image ... i miss some texture and 'thickness'. I would like to see the string cutting in the hips... You know what I mean ... in an arty way...

Please apologize... my english and my advice...

Cheers! And don't apologize - 1. Totally agree with you - the pants need at the very least a hint of a highlight and some cut and displacement on the flesh on the hips 2. your english is much better than my non-existent German!

Hi Dave just started trying to paint in photoshop, if this is taken off a scanned pencil sketch at a4 size what size do you work at in photoshop to get such clean lines? Great work by the way

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loopydave In reply to HowardMolloy [2011-02-25 15:50:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man! Really like your watercolour work!
Usually I scan a A4 sketch in at somewhere between 400 and 600 dpi - not so much for the clean lines (somthing you can do just as easily at a much smaller size), but because it gives you more printing size options later one. In terms of pixel size, most of my pictures are painted between 5000 and 8000 pixels high.

Thanks Dave for the help and the comments, really like your work as well. I like doing the watercolours but I think Iam getting addicted to the computer after doing some cartoon work that I thought I could colour up in photoshop which I did.
