Description
Have had quite a few requests for tutorials, but haven't really had the time to do a proper one - this little step by step of a single character from a cover done a few years back will have to do for the moment. Did a series of concept sketches - the client ended up wanting a naked charlies angel kind of vibe and this the process I used to paint the middle character.Click download for full size file!

So you use the pencil shading as a guide to painting later, or do you colorize the pencil? It's absolutely beautiful!

I sometimes colorize my pencils, but only really as quick way to block in colour when working out my palette - kind of like an underpainting. Then I paint over it, using the pencils as a guide. As I've gotten more confident with my colour work I've tended to lose more of the tonal work in the sketching stage just to speed things along. Cheers!

All of your pieces are fantastic, from the gray to the finished color. And the fact that you took your time to make something like this for us schmucks out here, is very nice indeed. Thanks and seriously, you kick ass.

Cheers! Nice of you to say... though I probably need to cut back on the ass kicking - the next doors donkey is looking starting to look rather angry everytime I pass by.

.I'll never talk again, oh boy you've left me speechless.. <3
but can you tell me, for coloring did you use overlay or some else blending layer. or not.

Loopydave In reply to martabas [2010-05-26 13:35:19 +0000 UTC]
Thanks ma'am (I think
)
No blending layer, just painted it using standard soft and hard edge brushes. Okay, not quite true - used a subtle teal overlay on her legs at the end to pick up a bit of the background colour, but other than that its just plain old painting.
Cheers!

Nipples always give me grief. Thanks for the step-by-step but I'm not sure how much it's going to help me at this point. haha So you're a firm believer of "colorizing" a previously black and white sketch? I've heard good things but never got around to it. How big was your original sketch?
Thanks!

I used to do rather finished tonal sketches and paint over them (like in this example), but as I've gotten more confident with my painting, my sketches have been getting looser and I tend not to use tones so much, just indications to myself where I want the shadow to go etc eg [link] and [link]
Original sketch in this case was done on a piece of A4 photocopy paper and took up most of the height.
Cheers ma'am!

The finished cover took about 3 weeks to paint, but I really like delving into details, so there you have it! They don't call me loopy for nothing!
