Description Have had quite a few requests for tutorials, but haven't really had the time to do a proper one - this little step by step of a single character from a cover done a few years back will have to do for the moment. Did a series of concept sketches - the client ended up wanting a naked charlies angel kind of vibe and this the process I used to paint the middle character.

Just another worshipper at your feet...

Just curious: What size do you paint at to get that much detail? My hand is cramping up just thinking about it...

Amazing work!

Loopydave In reply to BenTanArt [2009-10-07 11:37:13 +0000 UTC]

Lol! Thanks man! The three figures were painted at just over 4000 pixels high and I went down to a single pixel sized brush at points, which is kind of nuts, coz the art was then shrunk down to about 75% of the original for the cover version. Learnt my lesson years ago though - paint something too small and you have problems later on, but paint it too big and you've got yourself covered!

BenTanArt In reply to Loopydave [2009-10-07 22:32:20 +0000 UTC]

Ah, thanks for the info. Very true about large sizes, though I'm still trying to find my groove there. I find that too large and it's difficult to ink (I do all mine digitally) and color. 4000 px is about the max I go to, with most around 2-3k.

soriyama aint got nuthin on you..thanks for the great tutorial...have you ever seen peter deSeves artwork or todd schorr?

Loopydave In reply to DamSkippy [2009-09-24 10:44:54 +0000 UTC]

Cheers man. Love Peter de SΓ©ves work - his designs for the Ice Age cartoons really gave those movies character! Not so familiar with Tod Schorrs work, but I have seen some of it around.

DamSkippy In reply to Loopydave [2009-09-24 18:07:48 +0000 UTC]

i suggested these 2 artists to you,,i think moreso because i think u r all fluctuating around the same genre and style..and becuz it must be so hard for a man of your skill level to find kinship with other artists,, i met peter deseve at a comiccon san diego..he told me he designed the animals of ice age and not the people boy what a difference.the animals are so lively and expressive and the people look like they escaped the morgue minutes ago!! piece-out dave!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loopydave In reply to DamSkippy [2009-09-24 23:53:33 +0000 UTC]

Couldn't agree more on the iceage designs - the animals are so amazing and the people are SOOO bland. Fortunately there are no people in the third movie and the dinosaur are great! Would have love to have me Peter - am a BIG fan! Cheers man.

how could i miss this one! nice to see it! i guess the pencil shading is pretty helpful

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loopydave In reply to dasAdam [2009-08-18 09:08:41 +0000 UTC]

I use the pencil shading to work out the lighting and finer details for the painting, though I have been deliberately spending less time on tonal work on my sketches lately as I've gotten more confident with my painting!

comic-coloring In reply to ??? [2009-04-05 15:05:55 +0000 UTC]

from step 2 to 3 do you blended the lineart out and colored in the shadows you had from the pencils or do you merged them somehow?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Loopydave In reply to comic-coloring [2009-04-05 23:09:07 +0000 UTC]

Not really either - In this painting I just painted directly on the pencils with a large soft brush set to various stages of transparency and built up the colour.
