response to thisSpencer was a mixture of excited and nervous as he made his way to the nova tree. He had decided to look at the rattle's rest bulletin board to see the news when he went by on his morning jog, and he had found an ad for someone looking for - wait for it - a sparring partner! Spencer had been training for a while now, remembering Russel's words about how a scrawny kid wouldn't be able to protect others and let alone help the sheriff, but beating up trees and makeshift dummies wouldn't help him get stronger forever. Sure, he had a good deal of power behind his punches now, but he'd never actually fought or, well, sparred with another gro. (He'd thought about asking Minnow all of a single time before remembering how covered in pointy features they were, not to mention they didn't really seem the athletic type.)
He hoped that this gro didn't mind that he didn't have any previous experience with sparring, and that he wasn't exactly the strongest wyngro. Gosh, what if they wanted to duke it out with some beefy gro who could match them blow for blow? Now that was not Spencer.
He found himself absentmindedly running his fingers through the neck fluff that poked its way out of his tank top, trying his best to make the fur look somewhat tame. He wanted to make a good first impression, after all.
When the nova tree plaza came into sight, Spencer was already looking for someone that could've been the gro he was looking for. There weren't many people just sitting around in the plaza that day, just a family sitting right by the seedling and a lone gro sitting on a bench a short ways away.
Steeling his nerves, Spencer drew himself upright and made his way over to the red wyngro with the spiky hair. It reminded him of his roommate, Spencer once again remembering how he definitely did not want to resort to asking Minnow to spar. It seemed that the sound of Spencer's hooves on the cobblestones caught his attention, since he glanced up and smiled politely when their eyes met.
"Hi, are you the wyngro who's, um, looking for someone to spar with?" Spencer asked, trying to sound more confident than he felt.
"I sure am! The name's Kirishima!" His smile seemed to become a million watts beyond a simple polite gesture as he quickly got to his feet, extending a hand for Spencer to take. "So, you interested?"
He shook the offered hand, returning the smile with one that he was sure wasn't quite as bright as Kirishima's. "I've been wanting to find a sparring partner for a while now, but I don't have much experience. I hope that's okay."
"Of course! I mean, I don't really have experience with sparring with others either, that's why I've been looking. Anyway, you seem pretty fit! Might have to bulk you up a little," he teased, lightly punching Spencer's arm, "'cause you're kinda skinny, dude. Don't want you to break anything."
It seemed that Kirishima's easygoing demeanor helped Spencer relax quickly, as he was laughing when he rubbed at the stinging area on his arm. "Yeah, I do need to build more muscle too, before we get into anything too crazy. It seems like you have a big lead on me there." His eyes raked over the other's form, taking in how lean and well-built he already was. He'd clearly been training for a while too, but Spencer was fairly certain that he wasn't spending half of the time in his day reading or trying to get his hands on new material like Spencer did.
Oh, no, if he found out that Spencer was a bookworm would he think he was too much of a nerd to spar with? He all too easily recalled taunts at the nook from his younger years, when they would insult him for preferring to read rather than play outside with everyone else. He would just have to keep the nerdiness on the down-low around him, then.
He suddenly realized that he'd been looking at Kirishima for far too long, and his cheeks went bright red. "S-sorry," he stammered, turning his face away. "I was just comparing. You definitely have a big head start. So, uh, where should we begin?"
Kirishima managed to look amused that Spencer was staring, giving him a shrug. "It's fine! I totally get it, but don't sell yourself short! I can tell you've totally been taking the time to build yourself up too! So do you maybe want to start with lunch and talk a bit? If we're going to be sparring partners, we could always compare diets, too. That's another important part of building strength!"
"Oh," Spencer said, a little surprised that he was being invited to get lunch. He had thought they would maybe, at most, arrange a meeting place for their first sparring session. But it was getting late in the morning, and now that he was thinking about it, Spencer was a little hungry.... He gave Kirishima an eager nod and the brightest smile he could manage. "Sure! Did you have anywhere in particular in mind?"
