Description
EDIT: Updated with another version that makes comparing more easy on the eye. (Fixed perspective, gradient color, fixes on the previous blender version)Well, as you can see, I compared 3 programs I do XNALara renders with, I'll tell you the differences of each IN MY OPINION, so my assumptions might be wrong.
3DsMAX: Renders the most realistic lightning and materials (especially when using mental ray), as well as offers the most options to tweak the model in whatever way desired, but a bit hard to cope with/handle.
Render quality: High
Ease of use: Low
PC Strength needed: High
Blender Cycles: Free to use and a bit easy once you learn how to set nods, lightning and such. A bit hectic when setting the camera (again, in my opinion) and using nods is a bit of a hard task, especially when you need to assign each and every material. But if you know what you're doing, you got a good 3d program with high quality rendering.
Render quality: Medium ~ High
Ease of use: Medium
PC Strength needed: Medium ~ High
KeyShot: One of the easiest 3D programs out there, as well as produces amazing results in several clicks, but a bit narrow when it comes to super tweaking the lightning/materials (unlike 3dsMAX).
Render quality: Medium High (If you know what you're doing)
Ease of use: High
PC Strength needed: High
So as you can see, those are only three 3d programs out there, there are many others fit for rendering in high quality, such as, for example, Maya, or Poser.
Experiment to find the one you like best of those, I can't say those are the most popular in either xnalara renders or any other renders, but I can say I've seen these 3 used the most (alongside Daz Studio though)
Furthermore, I'm not a huge 3dsmax pro or a blender cycles pro, but It's a glimpse of the results you can get through them.
I hope this helps you in choosing the best program fit to your needs.
And in the end, this is what I entirely think of this ->Β orig02.deviantart.net/ca96/f/2β¦
Sooo tell me which you like best below, perhaps tell me what you find easier, or what I should explore next.

I think that Blender puts on realism detail factor compared to the 3DS Max. Just look at the hair, it's like day and night. I agree that Blender is a bit hard to use since it doesn't applied the texture from the early you load your model. In Internal Blender render, it doesn't like that. But in Cycles, as you say, a bit too hard too assign them one by one on it. But the bright side is, you could play with the nodes and try to get the details out. Ranging aside from it's use and how proper you set your nodes can end you up longer rendering time.

Exactly what I felt, blender cycles can be a very good 3d program and I've seen tons of amazing renders made by it, if you can get used to it, you can create amazing art.

IshikaHiruma In reply to LoveStruck2 [2013-10-19 00:39:11 +0000 UTC]
Absolutely. It is a good 3D program for sure. Requirement friendly and many other Blender artist out there that always try to help you out, it is a pretty decent software to have and knowing it. Sometimes I even wonder when looking at the blender.com gallery. It's hard to tell which is photograph and a rendered image really. The details is just so good to be true. The realism factor were really being pushed to the limit everytime I see something like that.

Tell me about it, when I first touched blender, it was blender 2.49b, and that was before cycles.
Let me tell you how much I struggled with 2.49b, so when I upgraded to 2.59b and beyond, I had to learn blender all over again.

IshikaHiruma In reply to LoveStruck2 [2013-10-19 01:03:07 +0000 UTC]
Fuck it. Here's mine~ I started at Blender 2.49b, getting the real basic and shits working on with help from a friend(now he's my bro), struggle to much too, then I jump to Blender 2.63 following all the tutorials I can find. And then I jump straight to Blender 2.68, feeling pretty good and confident at some point looking at my previous work compared. Then I jump back to Blender 2.66a learning all Cycles thing since I was infuriated that Blender Foundation already stop working on its Internal render and focusing on just Cycles. Still learning and never will stop.

Well my journey in blender is sad one, when I saw what cycles is capable of after viewing some amazing mmd renders (hint: the artist got a DD), I got sooo frustrated and I just didn't understand how to render realistically, there was a lot of help on the net, but not well organized to tell you exactly what to do. So I just went and moved to keyshot after seeing how nice the renders made in it looked like.... I have never been so wrong.
Seriously, if I just stuck to cycles I wouldn't be currently searching for something that isn't possible to happen (in my case keyshot rendering things like 3dmax or cycles does), I would've actually spent the last year following tuts, not teaching my self, which made the process pretty much a lot harder.
Oh well, I think knowing more programs would help me in the long run, after all, I'm probably aiming for a game design or graphic design degree, so it would probably help me that I know many programs. ._.Β

IshikaHiruma In reply to LoveStruck2 [2013-10-19 01:30:41 +0000 UTC]
I think I knew who is the render artist is you speaking of. Hmm~ I agree, tutorial from the net is not that really organized and some are hard to understand. Even by basic. You pretty much had to teach yourself everytime you want to try it. Hey, it's learning right? So, get that shit together and nailed it. Back when I first start to rendering in Blender, I almost had no idea what the fuck I'm doing but now, I can speak for myself. I actually never try any other render program alongside from Blender really. Looking at YouTube, there's plenty of tutorial on how to render properly. I just follow it and I can produce the same thing too. Thing is, I'm fuckin' lazy.
That's pretty good thinking. Nice choice you made. Since you aim for the graphic or game design degree, it's really an advantage knowing all the render program. It obviously can help, sooner or later. As for me, well, I'm just doing it as hobby. Not really a hobby but rather as a wasting time doing something productive by any means.

Meh, I'm doing renders right now FOR THE SAME REASON, I mean like i sit around and be all like, what am I doing with my life, thus.... this was born.
But yeah, I just lose hope when I see how much other people managed to produce in blender and other programs while I sit there like
And the same thing happened to me when I first got into KeyShot, I was like, how do I import, how do I assign materials, how do I click, , there was NO keyshot tuts around, soo I made one, and I still can't believe I taught myself keyshot and made it XD
So I guess all is good, maybe I'll find a way to better renders, maybe not, you never know

Looks like we're in the same shit after all. LOL~ But at least you know how to render on those three programs. Never really cared bout it to be honest. I just strive which is the best for me and I can co-op with. As for me, Blender would be the real shit for me. But if luck matters and willing, I will definitely try it. It's just my laptop is 4 and a half fucking years now. It can barely stand 4 hours when rendering. But I don't care, I still make render with it.
That's good to know. Now people can start render in KeyShot thanks to your tutorial. I don't use it but thanks for making the community a favor. You're kind enough to giving shit to these kind of matters. When I first started rendering, I just like doing it to mess with it but now, shit just got serious eveytime I see a new nice render. Kinda pushes me to the edge for striving better. But ain't nobody got time for dat~!

LoveStruck2 In reply to IshikaHiruma [2013-10-19 02:17:14 +0000 UTC]
I agree on many points.
I mean like, I upgraded my laptop because I was soo frustrated that I needed a whole day for a damn 1200x800 render, now I comfortably render a 6000xsomething one with many samples in max of 3 hours.
And yeah, seeing art sometimes makes me facepalm, sometimes give up, sometimes beg for tips, and sometimes work harder, but meh, it takes so much to reach the levels of art I've seen.
And you're welcome, the least I could offer is that tut, I mean everyone must have a chance at something, but not everyone is able to.... so I made that tut, it has all my Β blood and sweat I spent in learning it, and I realized that it's very hard learning without a tut.... so yeah

I'm thinking of getting a new laptop too but maybe I go for the desktop one and get the nvidia GTX500 processor. Pretty fast for a rendering I heard. For now, I can only render a 1600x2400 picture with a 400 samples and 3 to 8 hours max. I can't help it though since it's a old laptop. Been using it since I'm 14 something years old. But sometimes I was infuriated too knowing that Cycles don't really have the standard processing time for it.
I often faceplam myself(literally lol) when I see shit people who works on XNALara. It's just like, seriously? You load a couple of model and pose and it's done? What the fuck are you even doing? LOL~ But seriously, this kind of people who doesn't even bother to bring it to a next level. Pretty sad. And pathetic too.
I understand the pain. I want to make a tutorial on how to render on Cycles too but I fear people will using it for none greater good. I'veΒ seen enough shit to be honest but meh, I don't even care anymore because things like this gets trendy. One people do it and the same shit happen to the others as well. I rather teach them directly if I had the chance. I often use the TeamViewer program to teach my friends how to render in Cycles properly. That's better than out judging the result when you put hope on people. You want them to succeed but instead, wrong choice of what you had teach and wrong understanding on what really 'art of rendering' is.

Well, I personally find 3dmax the hardest 3d program I ever been into o.o I tried poser, daz studio, etc etc etc, I find maya and 3d max to be the hardest of all, but produces VERY good results.

At first I used Blender's native engine to render pictures, and Cycles can be pretty amazing too, but I'm totally lost when it comes to use it ! xD
I'm too lazy too to learn something else than Keyshot, especially now that I don't have as much time as I used to have before, I can't render pics anymore
I might reinstall 3DSMax to rip my custom character from Skyrim through, I hope that I will be able to do that !! XD
