Description
EDIT: Updated with another version that makes comparing more easy on the eye. (Fixed perspective, gradient color, fixes on the previous blender version)Well, as you can see, I compared 3 programs I do XNALara renders with, I'll tell you the differences of each IN MY OPINION, so my assumptions might be wrong.
3DsMAX: Renders the most realistic lightning and materials (especially when using mental ray), as well as offers the most options to tweak the model in whatever way desired, but a bit hard to cope with/handle.
Render quality: High
Ease of use: Low
PC Strength needed: High
Blender Cycles: Free to use and a bit easy once you learn how to set nods, lightning and such. A bit hectic when setting the camera (again, in my opinion) and using nods is a bit of a hard task, especially when you need to assign each and every material. But if you know what you're doing, you got a good 3d program with high quality rendering.
Render quality: Medium ~ High
Ease of use: Medium
PC Strength needed: Medium ~ High
KeyShot: One of the easiest 3D programs out there, as well as produces amazing results in several clicks, but a bit narrow when it comes to super tweaking the lightning/materials (unlike 3dsMAX).
Render quality: Medium High (If you know what you're doing)
Ease of use: High
PC Strength needed: High
So as you can see, those are only three 3d programs out there, there are many others fit for rendering in high quality, such as, for example, Maya, or Poser.
Experiment to find the one you like best of those, I can't say those are the most popular in either xnalara renders or any other renders, but I can say I've seen these 3 used the most (alongside Daz Studio though)
Furthermore, I'm not a huge 3dsmax pro or a blender cycles pro, but It's a glimpse of the results you can get through them.
I hope this helps you in choosing the best program fit to your needs.
And in the end, this is what I entirely think of this ->Β orig02.deviantart.net/ca96/f/2β¦
Sooo tell me which you like best below, perhaps tell me what you find easier, or what I should explore next.

Is it? I'm not sure if it is, it's just really really easy and requires no to little time to learn it if you have someone to teach you the basics, the rest is up to practice

I've been working with cycles for a while. It looks like 3ds max has some better shading, but when you look at the arm holding the lollipop, you can tell that 3ds is making it very blocky, as well as with the hair. A lot of things can be tweaked and changed with different liking or materials and cleanup, but you can't fix blocky polygons. I'll stick with blender, but thanks for the comparison.

No problem, I like the shading in 3ds max so that would be why I would choose it after finishing up with KeyShot. Good luck with blender

3ds max, Maya and Softimage are all owned by Autodesk. They all come with NVIDIA's mental ray renderer. So what you are comparing is mental ray render not 3ds max. Because... Technically you can achieve the same exact image from all 3 of them provided you know how to tweak and tinker with the settings.Β Think of it(mental ray) as a camera with 3ds max/Maya/Softimage being the photographer. If they have the exact same camera and it was prepared beforehand and all they had to do was setup the scene and lights, you get the exact same picture provided they put everything in its proper position. Get me?
Another is that I see comments about lighting and quality. Honestly this was just because I don't think it was identical setup for all of them. With draft quality settings for the mental ray shot it's not really a fair comparison.
If you ever think about updating this
I recommend using:
Renderer>
Sampling Quality>Unified Sampling
Quality 5, Minimum 4, Maximum 128
Filter Type: Mitchell, 4x4
Jitter On
Global Illumination>
Initial FG Point Density 2
Rays 200 , Interpolate 200
Diffuse Bounces 2
(optional)>Photon Mapping (Labeled Global Illumination in older versions)
5000 Samples
Glossy Reflections/Refractions 2x
Soft Shadows Precision 2x
For your lights make sure you are using rectangular shape under shape/area shadows with 64 samples. Also make sure you are using Ray Traced Shadows.

I've been trying to learn Blender for a while now, and i was really hoping that my final product for my own project would look like 3D MAX, but I'm a bit disheartened. I mean, it's plausible i know, but eh..

I'm still learning Blender, and I mean, it's opensource and they're going to be improving over time thanks to the Blender community, so I don't believe I should give up just yet.
Plus, the work that has been created by Blender so far is astonishing.Β
Still, I wanna try 3ds Max. I've never looked into Keyshot before. Is it easy for beginners?

Of course it is! KeyShot is one of the easiest programs I've ever worked with, not only the interface is easy to understand, but a beautiful piece can be created with a click of a button! If you would like to get started, you can check the tutorials I made specifically for KeyShot

Truth, 3dsMax has such realistic hair, but a pain when it comes to setting it and such.
While blender is easy, it lacks in realistic effects (not when you know what you're doing though) and its kind of slow.

lezisell In reply to LoveStruck2 [2013-11-04 19:34:21 +0000 UTC]
Truth. But it depends of PC hardware configuration too. For example right now I'm rendering picture for my good friend :iconkenshiro541: for 1500 samples in blender and at this moment 254 samples of 1500 and it took from me about 3 hours. His PC turned out too slow for this.

Yep, but blender takes the least time (imo), 3dmax the most, and Keyshot depends on the resolution.

3ds Max is the superior one (in my opinion anyway), but the hair looks better in Blender. I LOVE DAZ Studio and Poser but I've never used them with XNALara (but I've seen incredible results from it).
π: 0 β©: 1
LoveStruck2 In reply to angelic-noir [2013-10-19 02:24:18 +0000 UTC]
I tried poser once, it was okay-ish but I didn't find anything special in it, though I also did see incredible results with both of them, but I guess it's because the models used there are modeled/customized from scratch, not the normal game models we do, I think poser/daz studio both offer custom hair/clothes/textures etc...
And that's it, I'm SO moving to 3ds Max when I got the time, true about blender, there is something idk in blender that causes hair to look realistic, but I've used a group nod I found on the net soooo

All hail 3DS MAX! Love it to death! and Maya...those two are my favorites! Then again...I never used blender or keyshot. Don't even know if you can animate or anything there...Ha!
π: 0 β©: 1
LoveStruck2 In reply to UmbrellaSpecter [2013-10-19 01:14:20 +0000 UTC]
Nah you can't animate in KeyShot, but it depends on your version though, I did see an animation bar inside keyshot but I think it's only for importing animations, I never really tried it.
3DS MAX is cool as hell, I'll probably learn more of it soon, but I did try Maya and was all like
π: 0 β©: 1
UmbrellaSpecter In reply to LoveStruck2 [2013-10-19 01:22:15 +0000 UTC]
Ha! Maya is better for modeling oblong shapes, like humans, (for me anyway) and I use 3d max for basic shapes, like interior designs. I had to learn both for school. Luckily animating is pretty much the same in both.
But I guess if your only posing xna or any pre-made models 3ds is probably easier.

If you do! I hope you get to learn Zbrush...my school was lame and didn't cover that...have to learn that on my own...then again...you sort of have to learn everything on your own in college anyway so I guess there isn't really a difference other than what the expenses and what the diploma says...lol

LoveStruck2 In reply to UmbrellaSpecter [2013-10-19 01:29:14 +0000 UTC]
I guess... lol
But isn't Zbrush for sculpting? I hear its hella hard.
π: 0 β©: 1
UmbrellaSpecter In reply to LoveStruck2 [2013-10-19 01:33:31 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, but you can export and import back and forth from Zbrush to Maya or 3DS. I found many of my fellow classmates were doing that and their models were amazingly professional looking. Compared to making models from scratch in 3ds and maya, Zbrush looked MUCH easier...especially to texture... ME WANT NOW! LoL
