haha, i wouldnt quite say that.. although i do prefer these types of robots designs "realistic" to the balls of rotating metal that are the transformers!

Holy... I was a bit disoriented at the start, but then I thought it was because it was a photo as background - and that in reality the robot wasn't as detailed as I had first thought. Then I relized it was all made in 3D, and I went
and then stared at it for quite a long time..

I saw your demo and its great!! can I ask you how you got that wire fram render scan view??? If you could, could you please tell me the work flow? I have always wanted to do that but could never really wrap my head around how to go about it...
Is it like aftereffects layers? but how...could you please provide some details/ ref images?

I wouldn't want to run into it on a battlefield, unless I had a couple of Warhammers or Atlases as backup.

First of all incredible mech I love the details with the straps and such and good use of greebles. I just was wondering what your process was what kinda software packages you used, how you got such a good render, which rendering engine did you use, how much of it is editing in compositing, and such. If you don't want to explain your process its cool I'm just curious.

Lucid-Grey In reply to BarnabyJones42 [2012-03-27 03:14:12 +0000 UTC]
Hey there, I used maya to model the mech, vray to render the mech, And photoshop for the post work.
I rendered out the mech with shaders, no textures for colour differentiation at all. So this means basic metal, basic paint ect.. I then broke up the colour and spec in photoshop.
As for the lighting (in my opinion the most important step) I used hdri light setup in vray with one additional rectangle light for direct light coming from the appropriate angle to match the background plate. Heres a link to some awesome hdri images "free" [link]
Shader tip for beginners.. For realism, always have traced reflections turned on, WITH Fresnel turned on.. which is then controlled by the refraction index, default usually 1.6
what software do you use?

BarnabyJones42 In reply to Lucid-Grey [2012-03-28 05:34:40 +0000 UTC]
I'm game design so I really don't get that technical with my lighting in shader although I have wanted to experiment with hdri images so thank you so much for the link and sharing your process with me (=. I use mostly 3ds max and zbrush but I been using a little bit of maya for viewing my normal maps on objects. Again sick mech the lighting definitely gives it that high quality of realism.
