All I know is I dont fear female ninjas because I know they have all their... lovely... jiggly... bits... I MEAN UH.... Vital areas exposed so that I can defeat them easily.... , great artwork like always! For some reason the way the clothing shapes around the breasts looks very very well done in this photo, I know you always do good work but it just seems to be a little bit more somehow in this one!

Definitely a stylish/looks kind of thing, in an odd example of usage, if you are stuck in the wilderness, maybe you can catch fish with it or a bird. otherwise...hmm, maybe to hold some boobs from flopping while in action without wearing an entire other layer of clothing.

Yup, pretty useless protection, just there to attract the eye.

>>to hold some boobs from flopping while in action
Now this is only one practical use of those nets

It is like dressed and naked at the same time. Sweet eye candy for male viewers

I remember "nude armor" rules from tabletop pen and paper games. It could work quite good in exotic settings. ~__^

GURPS, Hero System, OVA, Zettai Reido, Macho Women with Guns...you name it. And way more indies of dubious quality.

I think it's just the japanese way to make it look sexy.

Like how women would wear stockings in the US *shrugs*

Today, yes, it's to add more sex appeal to the character...
But originally this trend came from male ninjas

It's part of a stereotypical ninja look in Japan since at least 1980s: [link] (the manga was in 1986).

Possibly related, Japanese chainmail: [link]

Even earlier. In 1960. In manga from "the father of manga" Osamu Tesuka

I wonder who left that link?

To my shame I found this awesome blog only today when I looked for good image from Osamu's manga. This blog has much better examples of kunoichi's net armor. I could did examples on this pic much better

Anyway, this mystery "armor" and the Japanese chainmal are 2 different things, as evidenced by this 1961 film: [link]

LucidARTDVC In reply to Gargu [2012-07-06 23:02:47 +0000 UTC]

I think modern nets have too big cells to be variation of chainmail.
It's really something mysteriously different.

Yeah, but what I meant is this film had this thing [link] and it had the mail too [link] so my theory was wrong.

I never understood that either. It hardly offers any protection. Shoot an arrow in the right place and you could fatally wound one.

If it would be real padded jack ( Gambeson ) that would be pretty nice armor.
Ninja must be so bad ass they don't need armor
