Definitely a stylish/looks kind of thing, in an odd example of usage, if you are stuck in the wilderness, maybe you can catch fish with it or a bird. otherwise...hmm, maybe to hold some boobs from flopping while in action without wearing an entire other layer of clothing.
Yup, pretty useless protection, just there to attract the eye.

I remember "nude armor" rules from tabletop pen and paper games. It could work quite good in exotic settings. ~__^

I think modern nets have too big cells to be variation of chainmail.
