Description One of my most recent photoshop paintings as of opening this account. It is my modern reinvention of a classic 1950s monster movie which involves a US Naval expedition travelling to Antarctica where they discover a hidden jungle containing dinosaurs and prehistoric life.
The film was quite notable for its somewhat laughable creature fx which included mechanical puppets and animatronics (some of the film's better FX were accomplished through these, though apparently they were so expensive they forced the film makers to make the picture in black and white rather than in colour as originally planned), real lizards standing in for Stegasaurus and an awful if somewhat charming man in suit T-rex (which was sadly also the film's main dinosaur)... Having studied SFX for 3 years I rather enjoyed it for nostalgic reasons although I can appreciate it may be somewhat lost on the average modern cinema goer.

Anyway, as for the painting, I managed to get all of the assets in that I wanted (the vintage helicopter, the T-rex and the heroes hanging from the winch line) however I do feel this was achieved at the cost of the composition. While painting it I tried to avoid one-click solution custom brushes and managed to for everything short of the shrubs and bushes.

This will become a running theme on this profile but virtually any sort of feedback, complimentary or critical is definitely welcome on the grounds that it is at least constructive! If you see an issue with one of my pieces and have suggestions that will improve it I really do welcome it as it will help me become a better artist!

Yeah I remember that movie from many Saturday afternoon TV session. Well, they tried anyway. At least the dinos weren't a complete iguanafest. Your picture does it more than credit.

Haha, they did try indeed. I actually quite like the cheesy B-movie style of their dinosaurs and, like you say, at least they weren't the staff's pet lizards with frills and horns glued to them...
Thanks for the kind words, it's most appreciated!

I saw this film in the theatres as a 10 year old. Your painting is equal to, & in some ways much better than the great poster art created for the movie. Although the film's jungle set was well executed with lots of mist, the prehistoric creatures were pretty pathetic, even to my very young eyes. Where was Ray Harryhausen when you needed him! Thanks for sharing this great painting!

Thank you very much for the kind words! They are most appreciated.
I did take a look at some of the poster work for this film and it's pretty nice. I believe there was also a comic book version which had some very nice illustrations in it (the helicopter in this painting is modeled more on the comic design than the film one although they are the same aircraft type).
The jungle sets were especially well done and they matched the miniature versions, made for the dino FX, really well.
I quite like the B-movie charm of their dinosaurs but I definitely agree they're pretty pathetic from the perspective of realism.
This is definitely a movie that would have benefited from the work of the late master, Ray Harryhausen!

Haha, glad I've brought back good memories! I only saw this movie shortly before I drew this, which was probably about a year ago now. The seen where the helicopter and T-rex have that stand off did make me chuckle. Not particularly plausible (because clearly the rest of the movie was...) but very entertaining!

You should totally make it as a diorama! It would be amazing! But thanks again for commenting and sorry for the painfully slow response....
