And so, Sonic has attained the speed of dark XD (kudos to you if you get it without googling)
Whew, this was so long and challenging on so many levels... as much as I love the outcome, I sure am glad the work is behind me |D
So, aside from being a kinda sorta experimetn on just how many characters can I stuff into one picture, this excessively hard pice is my lil' tribute for Sonic's 25th anniversary. Technically it was almost a month ago, but yeah, the Blue Blur has been with us for 25 years now, and whether you love him or hate him, you can't deny he's had a huge impact on the whole damn gaming industry. He had some amazing games, some really shitty ones, many overhated ones (because internetz), but all in all, I'm glad he is still around.

And before I go into rant mode, a little about the pic itself. As you can see, it's pretty crammed. The thing with the two Sonics running together was pretty much inspired by Sonic Generations, but I wnated it to be bigger, so I though I could draw some of the rival-type badguys run along with 'em, or rather try to chase them down. And the whole thing was actually drawn on two sheets, the SOnics on an A4 and the rivals on an A3, initially I wanted to draw it all on one sheet, but it didn't work at all, so I scrapped that idea very early. Also, at first I wnated to add SIlver The Hedgehog as well, but there was pretty much no room left, I mean, even as it is, it's pretty damn crammed, and while I know I probably could have did the positioning and spacing better (especially Jet, who should be a lil' more to the right), but trust me, for me even this was one hard challenge.
In the end, like I said, I personally love the outcome, so I hope you guys will love it as well and tell me what you think about it. And many thanks to for merging the two pics together, I know I'd screw up the quality if I tried it |D

And now the ranty part, the character breakdown >3
First we have Classic Sonic (Sonic The Hedgehog, 1991) and Modern Sonic (Sonic Adventure, 1998)
Hehe, it's hard to believe it's been already 25 years, eh? I can still remember the first time I played a Sonic game, it was at a friend's house, a friend who was extremely jealous of me owning a NES, so when he got his Genesis, he was hyped that we'd be some kind of "console war rivals". Needless to say, he was pretty disappointed when he showed me Sonic, thinking I'm gonna go into a fanboy fit about Mario being better, yet instead I was mindblown by the awesomeness and dynamic action in the ble hedgehog game >D (we kinda became buddies later)
Just so you know, while I do like Mario, I actually do like Sonic a lot more, sure, he has some really shitty games to his name, but what people never seem to admit is how many amazing ones he has.Oh well, haters gonna hate, I guess...

Dr. Ivo "Eggman" Robotnik (Sonic The Hedgehog, 1991)
Cause what is a hero without a villain, while not technically a "rival" character and more of a main baddie, I just couldn't think of doing this pic without good ol' Eggman. He has been there this whole time from the very beginning, countless schemes and grand plans foiled, countless huge-ass space stations built and destroyed, yet it has done NOTHING to diminish his determination for world domination. In reality, it's not the hero who should be a role model for us, it's the unwavering determination of the villains no matter what plotshield they're up against, that we should take inspiration from XD And besides, it's not like Sonic had any actual rivals for the first few parts, until...

Metal Sonic (Sonic CD, 1993)
Until after 2 years Sonic got his very own actual rival. Sure, the "take the main character and turn him into a robot" may not sound too original, but it has been 23 years ago, when it wasn't as cliched to death as it is nowdays. And while his origin may not be the most original, throughout the years he has proven to be a most effective character. For one, his design wasn't just a "robot Sonic", he had many details that made him stand out in his own way, he's also one of very few characters to retain his classic look to this day, and it's one damn evil and menacing look at that. Plus, his first boss fight was highly original, and his subsequent performances in later games were just as great. Say what you will, but with all the increasingly dark and menacing antagonists, Metal Sonic still stands out. Also as a side fact, he's actually my most favourite character in the series >D

Knuckles The Echidna (Sonic The Hedgehog 3, 1994)
What not many people realize (even those praising the shit of out the "first 3 games" XD) is that in his first few appearances, Knuckles was actually a villain working under Eggman. Sure, later on they changed it to the "he's a good gy who has been tricked" thing, but personally, I think a "reformed badguy" story would be much more cool. But yeah, the spiky gloved echidna did start as your new rival in games like SOnic 3 and Sonic Triple Trouble, and proved to be quite effective at his job, even though he kept losing in the end, because player skills. Later he became a sort of anti-hero in Sonic and Knuckles, a bonus level NPC in Sonic 3D Blast, and finally a full-fledged protagonist in Sonic Adventure. Also, his playstyle was very different from Sonic's (much like it was for Tails when he debuted), making him stand out way more than the other playable characters from that era (like Mighty and Ray) and even got him his own title, Knuckles Chaotix, which was pretty much the best (and arguably the only good) 32X game. He was also cool and edgy way before being cool and edgy made you a terrible Sonic character XD

Fang The Sniper (Sonic The Hedgehog: Triple Trouble, 1994)
Also known as Nack The Weasel, this is one of Sonic's more obscure rivals, originating in the GameGear-exclusive Triple Trouble, then having a playable appearance in Sonic Drift 2 and finally was last seen as a playable chara in Sonic The Fighters. He might not be as effective as the others, and it's often noted how he's more of a coward and runs off when things get too dangerous, I still find his design pretty cool and his persona pretty amusing. And I gotta say, his cowboy theme and running from danger really remind me of Holl Horse from the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure series, coincidence? XD But still, that resemblence might be why I like him so much. He also used guns way before using guns made you a terrible Sonic character XD (though they change dit top pop guns in Sonic The Fighters)

Shadow The Hedgehog (Sonic Adventure 2, 2001)
Moving on we have probably the most controversial Sonic character until the princess what's-her-name appeared and stole all the hate. Or at least he became controversial when the internet suddenly decided he's a controversial character...
But lets start form the beginning, Shadow appeared kinda out of nowhere in Sonic Adventure 2, and he actually made quite a fanbase, he was basically an evil, more edgy Sonic and played very similarly, but Sega did their best to make him stand out on his own, giving him more unique details and even a completely different run animation (he slides like he's riding on roller skates, I know I didn't picture it good enough on my pic, but oh well), and whether you like it or not, he was very well received in his debut. His popularity eventually resulted in his standalone game, which was pretty mediocre (it had some ambitious ideas, like the karma meter and good/bad choices which got pretty popular later), and as such received lukewarm reviews... only years later to suddenly become one of the worst games in the franchise... because... yeah, about that, even after all this time I can't get a straight answer why the game is supposedly so "terrible", all I get is "gaem be bad b'cuz gunz" or "gaem be bad b'cuz 2 edgee", yeah, because guns were totally not used in a Sonic game before nor was there any edgy character introduced before... but like I said, hater are just gonna hate.
And yes, I gave Shadow a gun here mostly to piss off haters ;3

Jet The Hawk (Sonic Riders, 2006)
And finally, one of Sonic's more recent rivals. Jet originated in the Sonic Riders racing game series and so far was only seen in these. These were pretty awesome, if unconventional, racing games, but weren't too popular because they were more about skill and less about spamming powerups. And I am not kidding, it takes some serious skill to be good at those, hence why many people tend to overhate these games. Granted, the final part, the atrocious Sonic Free Riders pretty much killed these, because someone thought making a hoverboard game for Kinect was a good idea... yes, try to make a hoverboard jump withought an actual board to stand on or space to actually make that jump... or watch on Youtube how it looked when people actually tried it...
But still, the games were kickass, unique, and featured some really great new entries to the series character roster, like Jet, who's just as cocky about his skill with the hoverboard as Sonic is about his running speed XD

And for those who actually got to this part, as part of the anniversary celebration, I made a Sonic 25th Anniversary Playlist with over 300 tracks from the entire series. So do give it a listen if you got some time.
