Description Alright, this is the last huge school drawing (that I churned out in a ridiculously small amount of time) I have to upload. Sorry it's so big.

Note: The water is further away than it appears to be. Yes, the dragon would likely break its neck if it entered the water with it crooked like that. It's about to extend its neck, honest.
The dragon actually has a fatty sort of pad on its chest that helps to absorb and partially disperse some of the force from the impact. This pad also comes into play during physical disputes, that usually place the dragons standing up and trying to push one another over.

I'm actually rather pleased with the water. It's 3 or four layers of charcoal, but I liked how it turned out. My bio prof. commented that if you looked at a little tiny bit of it, you'd have no idea what it was, but looking at the image, there was no mistaking it... or something. It was over a month ago, how am I supposed to remember?

Charcoal- vine and compressed.
Original is... um... big? 14" by 20-something"

*Holy Diver, you'v been down too long in the midnight sea,
Oh what's becoming of meeee.*

Sorry, it's just that this picture reminded me of that song Holy Diver a little.
I like how detailed it is, very nice, the water is not bad ether.

It looks very good, as always, but is it just me, or does the water look kinda like the moon?

Seeing as how I spent several hours staring at that water, I think I'm a bit biased to answer that one, Squirt.

This is beautiful! The dragon-type-thingie's tail looks a bit like a leaf, though.

Yeah, you're right about the tail. I didn't spend quite the amount of time I wanted to on this, and I still haven't finished working out the specifics of the tail to my satisfaction, either. I really ought to sit down and do that one of these days....
Thanks!

Actually if you you take a small look at any part of anything...can you tell what it is.......????
I didn't know that dragons had to dive into the water with necks straight........Hmmm....Learning something new everyday..........Nice charcoal....
and the water does look far away......

Thanks. And yeah, that's true about taking a small look at anything. >^.-.^<
(I based all the diving stuff off brown pelicans. ...okay, most of the diving stuff- like the part with the neck, and the fatty pad. )

I can tell the water is pretty far off by the wave size and choppiness.

That's a really awesome piece!
It's so realistic; man you're good with charcoal.
The shading on the dragon is sweet!

Heh, the water does look really good.

Having the neck curved like that looks odd, as you mentioned. I hope the dragon doesn't get distracted before it hits the water.

Luthrai In reply to TaiStormsword [2007-06-30 20:31:39 +0000 UTC]

Fortunately (and unlike me) that dragon isn't ADD, so I think he'll be fine.
I was basing the neck curvature off brown pelicans, who also dive. Most of the photos of diving pelicans showed them in that position, while only a few images got them just before they hit the water with their necks extended. So I left the dragon's height be a bit hazy. It wasn't until my oral evaluation that I found out about the neck extension thing for sure.

When I look at the center of the image, around the sea line, it looks very realistic. The sea is so perfect. But when I look at the higher part of the image, somehow the feeling is lost a bit. I guess the problem came from the sky. Maybe putting some more clouds with stronger stroke/shading would work. And I could see that if you add a big sunset in the sea line, your work would be more awesome. I imagine the sunset in the left part with 75% of the sun already set below the sea line.

Luthrai In reply to serpentwitch [2007-07-07 19:24:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I can see what you're saying.
Originally, I wanted to try doing the picture with a pretty bleak kinda style, but I don't think I can pull it off. I should've put in some clouds, and probably some rock formations.
The sunset would look cool, wouldn't it? Unfortunately, the dragons only hunt from mid-morning through the afternoon. Heh, it's funny how often combining (or trying to combine) art and science do this to me.
