Description STS-126 Endeavour, launched 7:55pm November 14, 2008

From the NASA causeway, using a 24mm lens at f22 with a 0.9 ND filter (-3 stops).

This 412 second time-lapse exposure was started at T-10 seconds in the countdown, and terminated at T+402 seconds when visibility was lost a minute before MECO.

I processed the RAW image in CS3 to bring out the sky color using the "fill light" tool.

The original, uncropped image can be viewed here: [link]
The checklist I used to make sure it worked is here: [link]

My first attempt at a night launch timed-exposure is Cloudy Night Launch [link] which was the same space shuttle Endeavour from March of 2008.

Other shuttle photos are in this gallery: [link]

Notes from comments:
The camera was level (I used a hot shoe bubble level [link] ), but the wide angle lens caused the horizon to be curved, and since I cropped some of the left side off the image, the horizon appears un-level.

The shuttle appears to "fall back to earth" because the orbit and earth are round.

The trail changes color because the solid rockets burn very yellow but the main engines burn blue. The SRBs separate after two minutes of flight, but the main engines continue for another six minutes.

Yes, I managed to get this shot just about exactly right, but it was my third launch and second night launch, so I knew what to expect and where the flight path would take it.

That is WAAAAAY beyond cool!!! I am a BIG fan of the Shuttle, and I REALLY dig this

What kind of camera did you use? And most importantly, HOW do you get a 400+ second exposure

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

luvbight In reply to NinjaPickle [2009-11-20 02:51:50 +0000 UTC]

The camera was a Canon EOS 1Ds-mark III.

I used the Canon Remote Timer [link] to start an 8 minute exposure. I terminated the shot early once I lost visibility of the main engines.

I used the same timer to shoot the Leonid Meteor Shower this week [link] I used 30 seconds exposures with 1 second between shots.

It's an indispensable gadget for Canon photographers.

Thanks...it was more like fishing. I set up the camera with the timer (30 seconds on bulb, wait 1, repeat). It took 6 hours of shooting before I got this one image, but it made the whole night worthwhile.

All-in-all I took 576 pictures, got 1 big fireball, 2 small fireballs, and 4 tiny meteor tracks. Plus I captured 3 airplanes.

+, if you're not too busy, could you tell me how to use that 'fill light' tool, because the result is probably more quality than messing with HDR, and if you happen to know, could I the same tool in Gimp? Thanks in advance!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

luvbight In reply to x-ybase [2009-11-12 17:01:24 +0000 UTC]

If you have a RAW image, there's 10-12 bits of information in the raw data. Using the sliders on your software allows you to control how that information is reduced to 8 bits in your JPEG.

My current workflow uses the Levels, Highlight recover and Shadow recovery sliders in iPhoto.

Using CS3 photoshop the "fill light" tool adjusts the mid-range levels, and there is also a highlight and shadow recovery slider.

I don't have GIMP, so I can't help you there.

With proper exposure, your camera should have recorded all 10-12 bits of data. If you underexposed, you lost some significant bits. If you overexposed you lost bits at the other end.

HDR is useful when the subject matter has more contrast than your camera can capture in one image.

The fact that most cameras have a limit at 30 second exposure angers me... you'd have to mess with the firmware to do longer

Thirty years ago a shutter release with a lock was a $5 part at the camera store.

Thanks to digital its now a $130 electronic gadget (on Canon at least [link] ).

Still it's a wonderful tool and I use it a lot.

I used the TC-80N3 remote shutter release. I set it for an 8 minute exposure, but I turned it off after the main engines shut down at 6 minutes and 52 seconds.
