Description STS-126 Endeavour, launched 7:55pm November 14, 2008

From the NASA causeway, using a 24mm lens at f22 with a 0.9 ND filter (-3 stops).

This 412 second time-lapse exposure was started at T-10 seconds in the countdown, and terminated at T+402 seconds when visibility was lost a minute before MECO.

I processed the RAW image in CS3 to bring out the sky color using the "fill light" tool.

The original, uncropped image can be viewed here: [link]
The checklist I used to make sure it worked is here: [link]

My first attempt at a night launch timed-exposure is Cloudy Night Launch [link] which was the same space shuttle Endeavour from March of 2008.

Other shuttle photos are in this gallery: [link]

Notes from comments:
The camera was level (I used a hot shoe bubble level [link] ), but the wide angle lens caused the horizon to be curved, and since I cropped some of the left side off the image, the horizon appears un-level.

The shuttle appears to "fall back to earth" because the orbit and earth are round.

The trail changes color because the solid rockets burn very yellow but the main engines burn blue. The SRBs separate after two minutes of flight, but the main engines continue for another six minutes.

Yes, I managed to get this shot just about exactly right, but it was my third launch and second night launch, so I knew what to expect and where the flight path would take it.

AH!! Gorgeous!! It was raining in Orlando so I missed the launch! It literally started to downpour at the precise moment it launched. I was quite disappointed at not being able to watch, I knew I should have called in sick to work. Haha! Honestly, beautiful shot.

Beautiful shot. Too bad it has to be the last night launch for the shuttle fleet. I work over at Sanford airport so, with exception to the first few seconds after they leave the pad, I always get a good unobstructed view of the launch....and, likewise, I don't have to fight the traffic out of Titusville. I always loved watching the launches when there was a bit of cloud cover or multiple lays of clouds and that brilliant backlighting effect one gets when it emerges from one layer and into another.

I wrangled a Congressional VIP invitation to the causeway for this one. I'm so glad the night was clear enough that the engines were visible for almost 7 minutes.

The main advantage of the causeway site is you can see this view [link] when the main engines start.

I contacted my congressman in April to ask for an invitation to the causeway...so that took about 7 months.

I spent almost an hour just setting up the camera and tripod and testing the exposure

I got my technical recommendations from Stan Jirman's shuttle launch photography web page: [link]

But I've been shooting long exposures of the night sky for decades...it's just what you do at night

I love how perfectly you were able to capture the parabolic motion of the flight. It's like a real-life application of the physics I so love. Wonderful piece of work.

I wanted to go to this so badly, I was all ready to go when the weather on the west coast just looked like it wouldn't clear up.

I was actually reading the settings on the photos of the previous night launch you took and was ready to give it a try myself. Of course, a 4 hour drive for a 10 minute spectacle + traffic was a tall order, maybe if I was still in Melbourne I would have gone.

Definitely have to get those VIP passes though, this kind of a shot is a photographer's dream and it is perfect. Great patience, great camera skill, and just one of those once-in-a-lifetime shots. Congrats!

I was watching the launch at NASA TV. Some people say that this was just next boring rocket blasted to the space and there is nothing interesting in it - especially because there is mainly nothing happening on the screen when watching NASA TV live from mission progress... Blah...

But I got my own opinin about this... ;]

Godspeed, Endeavour! ;]

Nice picture!

I was there, on the Beeline, photographing it myself, but I only got video. I should have taken stills, instead, though.
With a bit of luck, maybe there will be another night launch...

I live about 12 miles from the launch site, so I've seen most of the launches, but i've never got a picture like this!

For a lightning bolt effect, try my previous launch photo, "Cloudy Night Launch" [link]

That's almost the same shot, from almost the same place, but because of the heavy cloud layer a very different image.
