Description STS-123 Endeavour, launched 2:28am March 11, 2008

From the NASA causeway, using a 24mm lens at f20 with a 0.9 ND filter (-3 stops).

This 39 second time-lapse exposure was started at T-10 seconds in the countdown, and terminated early at T+29 seconds when the shuttle disappeared into a low cloud layer.

The usual goal at a night-launch is to get a long glowing trail of the whole 8 minutes of powered flight. The clouds prevented that, but instead we get an interesting fire tornado or lightning bolt effect.

I used the long-exposure noise reduction mode of the 1Ds3, but it's not clear that it makes much difference for only 39 seconds.

If I could have done this over, I'd have shot at f22 with the 0.9 ND filter, to further reduce the exposure.

Excellent photograph. From a distance, and without a written description, this photo appears to resemble a very smooth curved lightning bolt.

Hello!

My name is Eloísa Valdes and in case you don't know it yet I'm one of your gallery moderators for photojournalism.

Congratulations on the DD!

I'd like to also inform you that we have a photojournalism monthly newsletter, called "Fear No More!, in which the DDs are featured, but there is also lots of informations: about contests going on, interviews, etc. This deviation of yours was obviously featured in there, along with many others. In case you are curious about it you can check it at: [link]

Oh, and we also have an official group for photojournalism now, it's called #NewsStand I thought you'd like to know!

C ya!

Amazing colours! You did an incredible job on this, I wish I was there as well. I don't think my camera lens would be good enough to get a show like this. This looks like something I saw on Halo 2 when the Covenant fired a giant laser at earth. The colours were just like this and so was the time. This got an immediate fave

Thanks. Shuttle photography is a very specialized hobby. Just getting your equipment on the tour bus and located on the causeway is an involved process.

I bought the 600mm Canon f4.0L just to shoot the shuttle. I'm glad I did, but it's awfully expensive on a per-picture basis

probably. I own a Nikon D40X with a standard 18-55 mm lens and then a 55-200 mm VR (Vibration Reduction) lens
