Description
WorshipWords won't come. This piece has been in the works for a few months, finally decided to finish it. Its the first of a series that I will hopefully finish in the near future, based on Africa's Big Five. My boyfriend is from South Africa, so the culture and the plethora of photographs are huge surges of inspiration.
10"x20" on a wooden panel, with acrylics and gold leaf.

This is beautiful and moving.
I am curious, how much do you have to do with the wood texture? Did you lay the black down first, to get an even base, or just work with it?

Thank you!
I always prime my wooden panels with gesso (thick white acrylic), then sand it down to get a very smooth finish so I lose all of the pretty wood texture. Though one of these days I'd love to try working on the raw wood and take advantage of the lovely colours and textures. C:

Thank you! <3 I absolutely love the effect gold leaf has, regardless of how much of a pain it is to apply

this is absolutely perfect!!! no errors, no hesitation, everything is where it supposed to be :3 and I still don't get how you can draw so realistic with acrylics! o.O

Thank you so much! <3 Those words mean so much to me
Acrylics and I just get along haha. Its a very versatile medium when you get the hang of it, easily my favorite. Takes a little while to learn, but its so worth it

I bought acrylics too.. and I don't know if I bought cheap ones or if they are like that every acrylics, but mine are so bright I can't even mix natural tones x'D

Hmm that's odd. Mine are on the medium-high price end and I've never had a problem with mixing natural tones. Try again maybe? XD

This is fantastic - the bits of gold make perfect eyecatchers and the lighting and shading here is perfect.
Really impressive!

Thank you!
I'm loving the gold leaf, it was tempting to put more but I think it would have been too distracting.

this is extremely bautiful - the chosen fragment of such a imposing animal with this little but powerful totem totally captured me. the light/shadow-game, the detailled texture and the golden accents... just love it!!!
looking forward to see more

Thank you! I was a little frightened that the gold leaf was a terrible idea, but I grew to love it. Its gaudy, but in a special way. C:

Nah, when it's used in the right way it's not gaudy at all. I think a lot of people tend to shy away from it, but you seem to have a good handle on a great way to incorporate it =]
