i have many apps, 2d and 3d, all using various rendering methods. but yes, for this dv, and for [link] and some of my other gallery-deviations i used my newest ray tracer.

glad you like the renders btw, if you want a print they are really cheap right now (zero profit on the biggest ones, just note me if you want a smaller one cheap).

nice honolulu, and i like the reflections + the preetham + the perfect dof very much

yes, it looks very geeky!

do you plan to ever add plants?

perhaps if i find a way to model with an l-system i shall render huge fields, nay countries, full of it...

-Normal-smoothing
Besides, WELL DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-Zoom-walk as if the camera was a climber
Would that actually be possible, or would the zoom only make gaps visible, so that noone could ever climb them?

lyc In reply to kram1032 [2007-12-25 12:48:53 +0000 UTC]

thanks, tho i didn't want a smooth mesh (actually normals are being interpolated as the surfaces aren't flat)

regarding zooming, it's just a normal renderer... sure i can zoom

Oh, so, that's not something like the border of some fractals? - Wait, if it was, the surface would look smooth, D'oh Silly me^^

very nice light render ! now just to smooth the terrain and would be very realistic !

ps.

lyc In reply to love1008 [2007-12-25 07:07:47 +0000 UTC]

thank you, you too my friend

oh, i can very easily smooth the terrain, in several ways (for example to load in photoshop and resize it smoothly, or to do it internally in my program), but for this i was unashamed of the computer-generated look, the cold geometry, and i left it so eventually, i will render very highly detailed 3d models from 3ds max or so, and those will be smooth.

weeeeeeee 3D great job dood, and once again you are striving to cap our uncappable account with the image size. ;D nicely done, looks great

PS absolutely LOVE the DOF and the detail on the low ground around the water, very well done. btw i take it this was modelled with maths not any app

the terrain is actually from honolulu! the data is from the graphics course i did this year, everything else is maths. of course.

hey i should email you a test render i did just now; it's in png though, so it'll make this puny 1mb jpeg blush...

thanks mate there should be more awesome stuff coming as i flesh out this rendering system to include all the usual features and a more powerful core light transport algorithm.

Void-Hamlet-Herself In reply to ??? [2007-12-25 00:18:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, but it does not look persuasive to me. (As in, looks surreal while I somehow expect it to be realistic). For what is worth, I am damn good at finding flaws in what I cannot reproduce myself ...

PS And that's not tundra.

lyc In reply to Void-Hamlet-Herself [2007-12-25 00:53:51 +0000 UTC]

it was decided that "tundra" sounds better than "cold"

about realism, the reflectance of that surface is sin(wavelength * freq + phase) * 0.5 + 0.5, so i make absolutely no claims about realism! it's just meant to look nice.
