This is slightly in the wrong place I bet, but it's about the Ring universe so I guess-

The ribbonleg-story really influenced me, as I've said before. I can't relate to the narrator in any of the ring-texts because I constantly feel like he is supporting the events of the ribbon leg story (Im not even sure they are in the same universe, but I imagine that the humans are the most advanced of the species and eventually thrashed the other species in the Ring and went on to become a galactic menace) by nagging to the 'listener' to get the augmentations and whatnot.

Random ponderings yes, but it's interesting how much one piece of text can influence the later ones, no?

Interesting thoughts, but yeah, the Ribbonlegs story and the Ring stories are totally unrelated. They're both two different kinds of science fiction universe. The Ribbonlegs story takes place in the type of universe where mankind is mostly alone and develops without encountering aliens. The Ring stories take place in the type of universe where humanity is just one civilization out of hundreds or thousands. Mankind is very far from being the dominant species in the Ring universe.

Ah, good to know.
The technology made me think they were from the same universe, since the augmentation and stuff.
That makes enjoying those stories easier, in fact, since Im not being bitter about their 'betrayal'.

Can you do a quick tutorial on how to set up the brushes that you use? I know it may be fundamental for most- but us noobs ( ME! ) would appreciate it I am sure- maybe zip the brush and offer it for download that you created if you dont mind. I would love to try it out! And I really appreciate you taking the time to write your process out in such detail- this is a bit different from the cyclops one you did- very helpful to read both!

Yeah, I'm always trying out different methods, trying to find the one that feels most natural for a given painting.
As for the brush, it just so happens that I just very recently posted a small tutorial in my ConceptArt.org sketchbook explaining how I made one of my brushes. It's not the exact brush I used here, but you can experiment with it. Here it is: [link] .
Thank you! I'm glad these tutorials have been helpful to you!

Thanks for the link- I have been playing around with it- I don't have the same Photoshop version as you so I didn't have the exact texture or brush with the 3-4 dots you seam to use- but I found a similar ones and have been playing with those.

Cool! I hope you have fun with it. That dotted brush that I used is actually a custom brush that I made.

Personally, I don't think I have an amazing sense of colors at all. I just stumble onto the right colors occasionally. But thank you very much all the same.

That is fantastic. Never realized how versatile layers could be.

And the colors on the final product are wonderfully rich. All in all, superior work.

Thank you, Emile.
Don't get any ideas that I'm an expert at layer blending modes, though. I just flip through them all and use the one that looks the best.

Wow, I wasn't expecting all of the blending layers. Your the first person I've seen that uses them this effectively.

One thing that I want to ask you, and this is something that I have a lot of trouble with... How do you chose your colors? Like, how do you know what to pick for shadows and highlights? There's something about being presented with every color in existence that confuses me.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

M0AI In reply to lycaenops [2009-07-01 06:42:08 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I go crazy with blending layers when I do these.
As for choosing colors, part of the reason I use so many layers in my Ring aliens is so I don't have to choose many colors. I just let the unpredictable algorithms of Photoshop's blending modes choose them for me.
However, there are some general rules for choosing the colors of shadows and highlights. I once heard a wise man (Jason Manley, founder of ConceptArt.org) explain that light and shadow are opposites. If the light is warm, the shadow is cool. If the light is saturated, then the shadow is unsaturated. And vice versa. That's something to keep in mind. Often, lights are somewhat warmer and more saturated than shadows, but there are many situations when the opposite is true. So, if you have your base color, when you paint in a shadow, make the shadow somewhat cooler and less saturated in addition to being darker in value. When you paint in the light, make it somewhat warmer and more saturated.
Sometimes I luck out and get the right colors right off the bat. Sometimes it's a struggle. I didn't include it in this step by step, but when I first added color to the kahoon, I colored it in a dark yellow-green. I soon realized that that wasn't what I wanted at all, so I used Hue/Saturation (ctrl+U in Photoshop) to change the color to blue. Working digitally allows you to change colors and try new ideas quickly and easily, so use that to your advantage.
Beyond those few maybe-helpful tips, all I can say is practice, and constantly observe. Watch how colors change around you. Theory and advice from others help, but you must develop your own eye.
