Description
Right, all I did was pick up a kiddie book on the norse gods in work, and its started up yet another 'mythology phase'. I simply love all those old stories, they have a strange quality about them that could almost have happened (in a strange way). Probably why people used to actually believe in them.Anyway, this is Fenris (or Fenrir) one of the children of Loki, the god of being a right pain in the arse. It was prophesied that Fenris would be the cause of terrible strife throughout the world so the gods sought to imprison him. The giant wolf creature wanted to show off his strength and allowed himself to be chained. He broke through every bond imaginable, laughing at their efforts. They worked in vain until the dwarfs made a ribbon made of the footstep of a cat, the roots of a mountain, a woman's beard, the breath of fishes, the sinews of a bear, and a bird's spittle. At hearing this Fenris asked for one of the gods to put their hand into his mouth. Tyr, the god of war took up the challenge, and when Fenris realised he was caught, bit off his hand.
Although, for some strange reason, at Ragnarok the twilight of the gods he will break free and eat Odin.
I dunno why he's in a cave of ice though, just seemed a suitable place to put him.
That has to be the longest description I've ever written

hey, call me stoopid, but why did he ask a god to put a hand in his mouth? seems a bit random, or is that the point?
great detailing on the fur tho he looketh muchly angerful!

he asked a god to put a hand in his mouth because he wanted some assurance that he wouldnt be imprisoned forever, but Tyr knew he would have to give up his hand, but Fenris didnt think he would, thats the way I see it.
Dankers

oh see, so it was a sort of sacrificial double bluff. hmm. do u ever wonder who originally thought of the ideas for these stories, or if they are really based on truth and just changed over the years in telling. its like the person who wrote greensleeves, some court entertainer or sumut most likely, but no one remembers their name. ho hum.

I got the italian translation of the prose... The Poetic (Skaldic) Edda is almost impossible to read!! It's written in kenningar (kenning is the singular): to say only one word an entire sentence is used!! That's very confusing!!
I'll make an example for you:
Instead of battle, "forest of swords" or "rain of red shields" or "feast of eagles" are used..
Here some more infos:
Kenningar and heiti
In stead of using an existing word one can make a new one, so if the old skalds needed a word for 'sword' they could call it sΓ‘ralauk 'wound onion' (in ancient times swords had the shape of a drawn-out onion). Likewise a snake could be called lyngfiskr 'heather fish' (i.e. a "fish" that "swims" in the heather), and a hawk hΓ‘brΓ³k '(he with) high trousers' (because of the feathers on his legs). A word like this is called a heiti (one heiti, two heiti).
An even more complicated way to say for example 'gold' is to call it dreka beΓ°r 'dragon's bed'. This is explained by the myth about the dragon FΓ‘fnir who rested on his stolen gold. Dreka beΓ°r is an example of a kenning (one kenning, two kenningar).
To make a kenning more complicated, one can compose it out of other kenningar or heiti, and call the gold hvalvegs glΓ³Γ° 'embers of the whale road'. The whale road is of course the water, and what shines like ember in the water is gold.
If you are interested, I found a lot of website on this subject

whoa!. that does sound complicated indeed. Hmm, yes, I'm gonna have to find a translation, not going through all that.

Very awesome painting, I love the detail, especially on the background . I have to admit I do not know a whole lot about mythology type stuff, because I am usually really busy and don't like just sitting and reading :/ I know I should, I just can't really find the time. It does sound like a great story though, and I'm glad you're interested in it
Great job with the description Longest ever? Well, congrats!
I can tell you've got great talent for painting and art. I love all of it, and I am improving, but I like this a lot. like a said, very cool detail, and the features are just great.
I'm going to have a look at the rest of your gallery now, and I'm adding this to favorites
Keep up the good work!
