Description
This man introduced me to a little-known cartoon called 'Fire and Ice' a while back, done by the same people as the Lord of the Rings cartoon (I know...try not to laugh, ok, when I was growing up that was all I had). The story for this was made up by the director, Ralph Bakshi and one of the best artists ever, Frank Frazetta and has an evil sorcerer by the name of Nekron gradually turning the world into a frozen wasteland. The characters here are obviously the hero and heroine and the old warrior who shows the young boy how to fight, surrounded by subhumans, Nekrons evil army of neanderthals. Now, the figures in this arent exactly Frazetta-esque, I'll have to say I dont know human musculature that well to be able to do the things he does and the two bottom characters are a lot younger, dunno why, just came out like that. I've done them the way I'd do them

That's one of my favorite movies, Frazetta + Bakshi + Rotoscope technology equals a fantastic animated movie. He later used the "Darkwolf" design for the "Jaguar God" comic book.
My absolute favorite animated movie is a little known one called "Light Years" or "Gandahar" in Europe where it was originally animated. From a sci-fi book with the screenplay written by Asimov and Caza did the character designs.

wow! someone else has seen that cartoon? I always wondered if they carried on with rotoscoping they could've done so much more...but no ones seems to have bothered with it.
oooer, I have to check that out, the name 'Gandahar' rings some bells
thanks

Rotoscoping was seen as a "Cheap shortcut" and universally sladered in major media outlets, even though it was invented by one of the fathers of animatin. IMHO, Disney and maybe a conspiracy. Bakshi is a disgruntled ex-Disney employee who's tried for decades to expand animations view in the public eye. Disney is quite content in its rut, and needs no competition. Bakshi, not having a tousanth Disney's funds, used those to make films like this and "Wizards" feasable. Therefore, I'm sure a lot of critics were 'encouraged' to bash anything he creates, using terms like 'the rotoscope meister' as if it was a bad tool.
The price on an old school rotoscope machine, around $20 grand and up, halted a legion of potential animators in the 60's and 70's.
Of course, rotoscoping has made a comeback with 3D graphics. All you really need are Poser3 (free on a CD) and some program like Photoshop. (any art/paint program that does layers) You can do any animation you want, then trace over it. Although I still prize learning to draw better above all else, I have dabbled in things like that. On my DA page, my dummy pulp magazine cover was done with a poser figure trace over.
Here's a link for Light Years:

You should find it in any single owner video rental house. Gone from the chains, but this movie lasts forever on the shelves because it still rents from time to time so they don't trash it, but it isn't rented enough to get trashed by customers.
