Description Teen Sherlock on his way to Uni checking the news on his phone. Bad habit, smoking, but there you have it -- he was a smoker, after all.

Ohs, meant to say that I'm trying to loosen up a little and deconstruct the background. Something I've seen AmandaTolleson do in some of her pics.

Yeah, you know, he's very strange that way, because it's such a damaging, self-destructive, ultimately dim habit, and yet you kind of just want to give him a hug when you see him at it.

Tsk tsk Sherlock!! Smoking is bad for your lungs: keep is up and you won't be able to chase a seriel killer in a taxi through the streets of London with your future best friend and prove that his limp is psychosomatic!!

Smoking is a dirty habit, indeed. And what you said. Very true. Running and smoking do not get along. Fast as he is now, he'll be faster still when he's totally quit. I hope you liked this one. It's the first chalk pastel I've done in a while.

I did! I really like the pictures you do of young him. I actually ran into a kid the other day (he was probably 16-17 years old) who was the spitting image of Sherlock! It makes me want to try my hand at drawing him during his teen/young adult years. I'll never be able to compete with this though...

How long does a picture like this usually take you?

MagicBunni In reply to BurntBlackRose [2012-02-25 06:10:28 +0000 UTC]

Oh, I don't believe it's a competition, Rose. I really think it's more of a tribute, and a way of growing, artistically. Only by practice, right, will you get a shot of becoming great at your 4 things! I think you should try! You can post what you like, and get feedback from friends on what might help next.

Depends, really. I did the PS one quickly, but there's almost nothing to it. I have a full-time job so I generally have to draw around that. So anywhere from a few hours for something simple, to days for something really complex. This one took about three days total, I think? I don't draw very quickly, it turns out.... What about you? How long for a piece, can I ask?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BurntBlackRose In reply to MagicBunni [2012-02-25 20:27:36 +0000 UTC]

Lol I know it's not, but I'm just really competitive. It doesn't help that I learn by mimicking things (like drawing with a reference, especially if it's a drawing that somebody else did) because then it's practically impossible not to compare, and they always "win".

Really? I would consider three days very fast!

On the computer, I usually don't finish them... I get about halfway done and then forget. I've had the same project "in progress" for about three months now (I'm painting a weeping angel, but it's been so long since I've worked on it, I don't even remember what medium I'm using). If I was to guestimate, I would say about... *checks watch* a long time. I'm a perfectionist, so... It takes a while.

MagicBunni In reply to BurntBlackRose [2012-02-26 04:27:49 +0000 UTC]

I totally get the competitive part, believe me. But I think my definition for winning is more like 'I did it!'. Sad, but true! If you did it -- I mean, if you got around the fear of failing and did the drawing, that's a gain/win to me.

Chalk pastel is my fave medium. I can put those together pretty quickly. You realize, by three days, I'm doing many hours, right? I don't draw or paint for a half hour or hour a day. It's two or four hours. On weekends, I can go 12 hours on different pics. I hope that's not strange. Oh, though! You make one of the best points -- I don't walk away from paintings, really. It's bloody hard to get back on track! I totally agree with you, Rose! I hope you get done the angel painting!

BurntBlackRose In reply to MagicBunni [2012-02-26 19:29:57 +0000 UTC]

No, I totally get that. One of my 9th grade prides was that I could build a 500 piece puzzle --all by myself-- in one day. Now, "one day" was six hours, which was more than most of my public schooled friends had availible to them in one day, but... It still made me happy.

I know, right~! Especially 'cause if I wait too long, then I'll have to start over because I did this that or the other thing wrong. It's maddening. >.< But sadly I have short term memory loss and this really whacked up attention span, and it seems like they scheme against me.

Ahs. Oh. A lot of things can effect short term memory. Exercise increased memory across the board, btw, or so a large body of research supports. However, the only thing that seems to help short term is repetition and memory tricks! You probably know all this though. Me, I'm not much for game and stuffs. I don't do puzzles unless it's mental puzzles, that sort of a thing. I could never have done your 500 piece puzzle in a day!

It's awesome, very cool looking !!
I particularly love his eyelashes.
And the background is good, you see it there but blurred like this it does not distract from the subject, while keeping him in it, I think you're giving me ideas in case I ever want to try backgrounds . (I hope what I say makes sense ^^ )

MagicBunni In reply to Pikku-Piru [2012-02-20 05:59:05 +0000 UTC]

Hi Pikku-Piru! Thanks so much for dropping by to look at this! Also, thanks for the commentary on the background. If you click to zoom, I'm finding it looks like a grainy photo, so it's not at all so bad, really, I'm beginning to believe. My pal, Rileysun nailed it. I wanted the background to look like a photo taken with shallow depth of field (large aperture and fast shutter speed).

I would love to see what you would do with the idea!

Guh, so much to say about this... okay, first: very happy to see another piece of art from you
2. THOSE EYELASHES.
3. THAT STREAK OF LIGHT. IS. PERFECT. It just adds a whole other level to the realism of the picture.
4. I heartily approve of the background. It looks like a portrait photo taken with a shallow depth of field (large aperature, fast shutter speed), and it lets you focus on his face while still having other interest in the frame.

The only concrit I can (humbly) offer is that his lips look just a tad full for this angle (but maybe that's what you were going for, to make him look young?), and something about his cheekbone area doesn't seem quite right (but again, could be intentional softening to portray youth).
Anyway, lovely work!

Btw, you nailed it. Utterly. This is exactly what I was after: It looks like a portrait photo taken with a shallow depth of field (large aperature, fast shutter speed). See... I got these amazing tips on photography from this charming friend of mine... and that got me thinking about my art....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rileysun20 In reply to MagicBunni [2012-02-20 03:03:55 +0000 UTC]

They didn't seem sharp enough; like maybe the angle of the shadow wasn't quite right?
But after looking at some pics: [link] , [link] , I think I may have been wrong. Especially considering that the light is coming from behind him.

MagicBunni In reply to rileysun20 [2012-02-20 05:11:02 +0000 UTC]

Okay, cool. I did fluff his lips a bit, because he's only about 16-17 there. However, the cheekbones are straight of the ref photo, so I wasn't sure what might have gone wrong there.

MagicBunni In reply to Bilou020285 [2012-02-14 15:09:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much, Bilou! It's a chalk pastel, so... what I know best. What's odd is how opposite I think our stuff works. Yours is more darkly brooding and deep with a painstaking attention to shadow detail. I think mine is sort of light and smooth and glossy by comparison. I doubt there's much more in common between our styles than the subject! Lol! Well, and I suppose the good sentiment behind them. Your latest I've seen ([link] ) is wicked, btw. There's that dark, dramatic detail I was talking about.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Bilou020285 In reply to MagicBunni [2012-02-14 18:24:30 +0000 UTC]

Yes, you're probably right... I really like darkness, but I really try to light my subject to create a kind of breackdown with darkness... I don't know if I succeed, but it's what I manage to do. And it's true, it cames a lot of light and joy from your art. Good analyze !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MagicBunni In reply to Bilou020285 [2012-02-19 08:06:24 +0000 UTC]

No, I think that's accurate, really. There's a lot of darkness, a lot of shadow value, against the vibrant colours you use too. Part of that is probably why I like your work. In some ways, it's really down to the brass tacks/no illusions sort of painting, which can stop your breath, sort of, in a gasp.

woah!! love it! so much!!! (saw it and had to comment, even if i should study right now hahah ) he looks so cool in this one! and i love the light on his face and his hair! his hair!! how long did it take you? (hahah tonight i dreamed about benedict cumberbatch visiting my uni and i could talk to him... and then i had to wake up )
but amazing picture! (just to say that again! hahah)

MagicBunni In reply to goia91 [2012-02-13 15:16:04 +0000 UTC]

Oh. Dreamt about him too, recently. How odd, yes? This is a person I've never met. My brain is fabricating someone I don't know at all for me... maybe so that all the energy I put into him actually sums to something. I don't know why, really. But I woke up because I found it so odd that I would dream so happily of an utter stranger.

Anyhow! Yeah! I'm not even sure how long this one took! I had a long time where it was sketched out, and then I went to colour it with... something, threw that layer out and decided to indulge myself with chalk pastel! I really love the light on his face in the Sherlock ref, but I wanted to do him uni age! And... voila!

hahha... really strange isn't it... but i use to dream a lot of sherlock and so on these days!... could be that i really got obsessed with it... even hounting my dreams
so yes.. maybe it's a kind of reward... we don't even know him!.. not a bit!... but still... i think he's amazing hahah
i always thought as soon as i start dreaming about something real it gets dangerous (if you know what i mean?) but i guess this is the first time that i'm really happy about it hahah

but this picture is really amazing... i wish he would wander my uni around like this hahah think i would faint or so

UNF! He is beautiful, and the light here is amazing. He has the same look I mentioned before, like the world hasn't weighed on him so heavily yet, he still has a bit of the baby about him. Soft.

I wouldn't worry about the background, no one will be looking at it anyway.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MagicBunni In reply to ABakerSt-Irregular [2012-02-11 18:37:18 +0000 UTC]

EEE! Teaque! Remember I said I was working on something I wanted you to see? This is it! Lol! So, chalk pastel is pretty much designed for light like this -- you know -- this kind of contrast. Gouache does really nice light too, there's enough substance to it that I always found it halfway between chalk and watercolour, but chalk really does this sort of thing well. So a bit of a cheat. He is a bit of a baby face. I see this as a bit of eyelash porn -- his eyelashes are pretty! (Taking the Benedict porn thang from romangeek's comment.)

He is a bit of a pretty baby at this point. Poor Merriweather! I have, however, discovered I like the background. I thought about it and I don't think it detracts from the picture in the least. I mean, I planned these nice, cool colours as best I could, I tried to show continuation of the light on the post/pipe back there. So I decided I don't think it's bad! Which I think is cool.

However, I mean, probably the best thing in the pic is the patch of light on Sherlock, particularly on his hair! It came out so well!
