It had been a strange and disturbing story, but far less sinister than that warped place they were in now. Still, Mago found it difficult to shift his attention to anyone but her. The flames from the fire between them danced and played with the shadows on her face, yet she looked perfectly normal. Beyond that brightly lit spot… the awkward, rotting huts, the deformed features of their inhabitants, the pitiful wimper of the captives, somewhere in the dark. Lucius toyed with the embers, kept his head down, tried not to notice… and the nightmare piping from the mound in the middle.

Scythe gleefully sucked on the sweet flesh of another date, then continued.

“I got up with a start. I still remember that moment of incredible shock and terror and the relief when I looked out of the tent, to see mom and dad outside, to breathe the clean air with a tang of summer rain… I called out, and I my mother smiled and I still remember how beautiful she was to me. I can’t have been much older than four or five then.”
