Description
This sketchbook is covered in polymer clay with glass gems, an old Fossil watch and a cool little ceramic bead.I carved a turtle shell pattern then added the scutes and textured some of the background to look like a turtle's scaly skin. After the clay was cured and cooled, it was painted with acrylics and touched here and there with metallic wax.
It measures 9.75" x 11.25"

What beautiful textures! This is really beautiful and detailed work. I've never worked with polymer clay before, but I wonder how heavy it would make the sketch book?

Luckily polymer clay is lightweight. What added the most weight was the glass gems. I can't remember how heavy it was but he loves it so I'm happy.

I could definitely make something similar. It would take weeks to finish. This one I made for my son.

if i may ask.......how do you attach the clay to the book after its cooked? u dont put the whole thing in the oven do yoU?

MandarinMoon In reply to Swiftfire13 [2010-09-06 17:06:48 +0000 UTC]
I use a strong glue called WeldBond to attach the cured clay piece to the book. I have cured the clay right on a few books in the past but sometimes, depending on the book, I has disastrous results LOL! I figure it is safer to cure the clay separately now.

How did you bake this without burning the journal cover?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
MandarinMoon In reply to clairerobby [2010-07-21 22:07:20 +0000 UTC]
The clay cures at such a low temp that the cover wasn't harmed at all. I even bake on sheets of copy paper to avoid shiny spots. You just have to be careful about the type of journal you use. I prefer spiral bound because you can remove the spiral and set the pages aside while you work on the covers.

That's cool. I supose even if it did end up messing up, you could even recover the inside of the cover with a sheet of paper cut to the size. Do you just use normal soft cover spirals or hard covered?
