Description I wanted to prove to myself I can make nice and elaborated backgrounds. I guess I succeeded but, oh, it's been the most difficult and time requiring piece I've ever worked on... I know many of you guys are used to spending more than 10-15 hours on a drawing/painting but I still can't understand how you manage to do it more than once or twice!

The idea is a mixture of a lot of things I experienced these days.
For example, I watched this really weird movie, Dreamcatcher, based on a novel by Stephen King. The kind of movie that looks promising... at first.

As artists I'm sure you understand what it is to work with illusion and dedication on a piece of artwork and what it feels like to be rewarded with feedback from others afterwards. So please, I'd love it if you were kind enough to tell me what you think about this, what I could have done better or what is it that you really like before you fave it. I really want to improve.
Thank you!

Simply amazing! There are so many details in this one, not only the background (which is gorgeous) but the patterns on the dress and the dreamcatcher itself are stunning!

It certainly shows!! I think the longest I've ever spent on a picture is 6 hours (at least in one sitting, and I don't usually have time for that these days) Was this one done all in one sitting?

Gosh, I'm so awful at backgrounds - I just get so bored and impatient with them. But this is really very lovely, amazing work.

You have read it? I knew it. If it was by Stephen King it couldn't be so crappy...
Thank you very much for the comment (I like your signature, by the way)

You're most welcome,

and its worth reading.
Seems like none of the movies are ever quite as good as the books...
I keep hoping though

Oh wow, the detail you put into this is simply astounding. You definitely have a good sense of colour yourself. I especially like how you used purple in this, it gives it quite the mystic feel to it. The only thing that bugs me, is the waterfall. Its such a bright blue, whereas the lake is a very dark blue, I am by no means an expert on waterfalls or even backgrounds, tending to avoid them as much as possible myself >_> but I do think that the waterfall and the lake should be more similar colours. Other than that, its a really beautiful image!

SΓ© que deberΓa escribirte un comentario largo y tendido sobre este dibujo, pero ahora mismo lo ΓΊnico que se me ocurre es: Las 15 horas las hiciste de una sentada, o durante varios dΓas?

No, mujer, durante varios dΓas. EmpecΓ© un dΓa por la tarde, creo. Y luego me pasΓ© el siguiente (o los siguientes dos) trabajado en Γ©l. Como unas 3-4 horas por "sesiΓ³n".
Luego te contesto a tus otros comentarios.

Really Really Beautiful - I love the colors especially, and your composition is very very good overall. When looking at this, I feel the calming effect of the scene, and the maiden at work with her Dreamcatcher and wolf companion watching close by. Your detail is amazing, especially with the maiden and the wolf, and the foreground.

I agree with Aliengiraffe about the waterfall and rock formation. Although, I don't believe you would need to move it too far over. I would also add the suggestion that the reflection in the pool should be faded way back in color and broken up just a tad more, so as not to look as perfect of a mirror image as you have it now. It may also improve the background if your tree tops in the farther "bluish" trees had just a little more definition and did not appear as close to the mountain top shapes.

You do seem to have great patience - my traditional drawings always took me many, many hours of work before I was happy with them - especially my pen & ink and color ink wash illustrations. I can't imagine how long it would take me to work on something as detailed as this... very well done!

First of all, thank you so much for such a complete and elaborated comment. I don't get those very often, and when I do, they're usually from good friends, people I really know. It's been a very pleasant surprise. Such an elaborated feedback get more credit than the average one, so I'm thinking I'm going to take your advices more seriously

You guys are right about the rock formation. It only takes your common sense to know such a line is NOT natural. I simply didn't think about it when I drew it, so I'm glad you made me see that, in case I ever do a similar background in the future.
You're right about the waterfall, too. Such a perfect reflection is not natural for that part either. I actually thought about that but I was clueless on how to make the proper effect with photoshop. So I decided i'd rather ruin the picture with a "reality" mistake (but a nice appearance) than messing it up by letting it look "bad".
As for the trees, I guess I see what you mean. Do you think I'd fixed that problem if I'd changed their color? Because I wasn't sure that'd give the impression they were closer. I thought about using a thicker linear, but that would have been too much, I think.

Thanks so much for liking the overall result as well and letting me know. I appreciate that you took the time and therefor I appreciate your advice very much.

Ela-Hara In reply to Mapvee [2011-09-08 17:46:06 +0000 UTC]

Actually, the color seemed okay to me. I meant perhaps a little more definition of the tree top shapes - similar to what you did with the greener tree tops in front of those. I believe just a few lighter dark thin lines to optically break up the total tree top shape you have now, so it doesn't look like one solid shape.

I hope I'm describing what I mean clear enough, sometimes it's easier to draw a quick sketch to illustrate....

I believe your background is really good though, just some minor tweaks needed in my opinion. Hope this helps!

This immediately caught my eye both from the excellent form of the picture itself and because lately I've been enjoying things that have the slightest relations to my herritage The shading and details are extrodinary and the good color-contrast brings the required attention to the main of the picture that so many people seem to forget when doing their works

Basically saying: I love it!

Seems I just picked the right moment to upload this, since you are enjoying things with relation to your heritage, like you said, and that made you end up here and leave such a nice comment.
That's an interesting statement, with the power of a good color-contrast to get the right attention. And I'm very flattered you think I achieved it. Thanks so much for commenting!

I like this a lot! I really like the strings of leaves in the front and the glassy appearance of the water. The anatomy on the girl and the wolf is very nice as well. I can tell you payed a lot of attention to detail and this took a considerable amount of time. The only thing that kind of bothers me is the rock formation and waterfall in the background, it looks a little too centered and even. If you were to change this I would suggest moving the waterfall over a bit, and making some of the rocks jut out a little bit. Other than that I really like it!

Mapvee In reply to Aliengiraffe [2011-09-06 18:12:46 +0000 UTC]

You know what? You're right. I didn't really think about that rock formation issue when I drew this, but now that you mention it, I agree with it. It really looks kind of unnatural... I'll keep it in mind if I ever do a similar background again.
I'm very glad you took the time to write such an elaborated comment. I don't get those very often
I'm also glad you like the girl and the wolf. Since you told me what bothered you as well, it's easier for me to believe the good part, too.
Thanks so much!
