Thanks, i will do the next part soon ... I am slow on this. Not so much a tutorial but a "how i do it" as i get asked quite often and this will hopefully show it better than me trying to explain it in a few words in a note as I usually do.

This is really interesting! Do you worry that if you do the face last that you will smudge the rest of your work? I tend to work from left to right just incase I smudge up the rest of the picture

Yes i've had to get used to using a mahl stick to rest my hand on to keep off the paper. That's actually quite an important fact I totally forgot to mention here

Thanks for the reply I'm not sure what a mahl stick is, but I'm guessing it's the long sticks you see sign writers using?

Yes that's it, i made my own (i got a nice smooth stick and stuck a sponge on the end and wrapped it tightly in Chamois leather) and it took a little while to get used to but it did free me up to work on the whole drawing in an academic way rather than getting restricted by left to right drawing. This gives me more freedom with interpretation and creative input ... this allowed me to interpret this drawing with a greyscale feel rather than a straightforward copy. It works for me and keeps my grubby little hands off the paper and i would say that it did help a style develop pretty nicely since i started with it
