Description
HOLLIDAY GRAINGER as LUCREZIA BORGIA. This is the first step by step of the drawing i am working on, i will share a little of my thought process as i work through it, hopefully it will cover all the points that i am asked to make tutorials for. It will be a split up into separate stages and i will try to cover as much as i can along the way. It might work out fine or it could go horribly wrong, who knows.Part 2 [link]

your tutorials are amazinly helpful! I printed out the entire Lucrezia one so I have it on hand when i need it. I'm curious as to what program you use to create these tutorials? A friend on here suggested I create my own for other artists. I was hoping you could share the steps with me. Again, amazing work <3333

Thank you .. i put them together using Corel painter 9 .. i'm no expert but i managed ok with it. I keep these and others on my website in pdf version for free download [link] . It's hard to find walkthroughs on line so i hope to add more with future drawings and if anybody gets anything from them then that's great.

Thanks, i learned a lot about what i do from making this. It's easy to draw and not think about how you work or why you do things in a certain way. It was a real eye opener. If it helps in anyway then that's great

I think I love you Mark Stewart. Well, you know, like, thank you for doing this. I'm finding this interesting and will be going on to Part 2 shortly. Tell your wife she doesn't have to be jealous; I love you as an artist and art teacher. The two drawings I've been slowly working on with 2 people in each drawing - I'm doing them my old way but it sounds like a great job to do your method on the next people project (if I ever finish these.) By the way - love your drawing table set-up.

Thank you Carol I know you always wanted me to do a video and i did try but it just didn't work out very well at all so i wanted to do the next best thing, so i did this instead.I hope you find it useful, it certainly was a fun project to do

AMAZING! believe i will read this very carefully and perhaps donΒ΄t aply exactly at the moment, ( because i canΒ΄t find Fabriano paper) and i still not near to That level, but i will use what i can use at the moment, but this will help me and a lot of people, thanks
Lucrezia Borgia is the daugther of Rodrigo Borgia? the pope Alexander vI ? Right? havenΒ΄t see the movie, i will do it

You're welcome, we always have to adapt slightly when drawing on different types of paper. As you know .. i use Fabriano and Bristol, Very different surfaces and i can do things on one that i can't do on the other. You're history is correct

Very very interesting!! I recently started working with more than one reference too, after by accident, noticing that it really helps to get a clearer picture of the erm... picture, and therefore a better end result.
I agree with Paula; now I want to try that background too! It's so cool!
I find it interesting to see that you leave the details until much later. I tend to start with them fairly quickly (even if I have to do them again because they'll have become unclear because of blending), just so I can get a feeling of likeness fairly early on.
Thanks for sharing!!

You're welcome. I was just replying to Paula's comment and saying that i thought i added the features very early as well, i had no idea that i did this much work first. I suppose it's because i focus on it more as the drawing gets more detailed. I don't think i would pay as much attention to applying an undercoat before a painting as i would when i was adding detailing to it. If the likeness is out at this stage i can erase without ruining as well

This is becoming a real eye opener for me, i have never really stopped and thought about how i work before. I had no idea that i moved around as much as i do I was surprised to see that i did not draw the eyes as early as i thought i did. It's going to be interesting to read it all back afterwards and see if i could have mede better choices and even see my weaknesses more clearly. I do get too wrapped up in the figures that i neglect backgrounds
this one was fun

I think you work in the best way you know, build it all up gradually and work on tones and depth as you go. I think it keeps your eye fresh on the whole piece and not just one area. I can't do it though, I wish I could
I bet you learn loads, it's really a pleasure watching her progress

This way of working is a very recent one, i used to methodically move across my drawing from left to right so not to smudge, but because of my eyesight i have gone bigger and since the retires serviceman drawing i have used a mahl stick. This has freed me up to go where i want when i want, it sort of set me free and i'm enjoying the experience

That sounds really good! Do you find your wrist gets sore resting on the stick? I've never managed to do it without mucking it up (I don't have one now, but tried at college) and wonder if there is a trick?

No probs at all, it does mean i have to stand at my desk a lot instead of sitting, so my table is set quite high to stop me bending over too much

It's been interesting for me to understand how i approach my work as well, because most of the time i just do it sort of subconsciously and without an awareness of structure. I hope that by understanding this myself that it will help me improve... That's the plan anyway
