Not sure what to say about this Mark - apart from absolutely fabulous - incredible work, really love how you have balanced the light - blending in the dark background and dark to light from right to left (as you look at it) - brilliant level of realism also - not sure what more can be said apart from Bravo

Thanks Paul. can't remember the last time i felt so lost on a drawing, i ended up so insecure and indecisive about how to move forward it took an awfully long time to get anywhere at all, ended up making so many bad decisions on it i'm amazed i got it finished. I think it looks stiff and awkward but i'm happy with the way the light works ... learned a great deal though so it was well worth doing.

Hi Mark, to me it is very reminiscent of Emanuele Dascanio's work -  for me the really key feature is the way you have blended the dark background into the figure giving a real sense of depth, i have no clue how you do this, and is one element that i really need to improve on (there are many other elements that need improvement also ) Every drawing should offer us something to learn, so if nothing else you will be happy with that

I'm honoured Paul, Emanueles work is an inspiration to us all and it takes the medium to levels i never knew possible. i would be very happy indeed to be under his shadow and learning from the master ... You are right though, if you don't learn anything then the whole process was a waste of time and i learned more doing this one than i have learned in the whole year so i achieved what i set out to do which was "does this idea i have work or not" (in this case not). I have no idea how i achieved anything to be honest as it was a "try something outside the box and see where it takes you" sort of project  (traveling without a map). Not the best way to work for me but it was just practice and learning. I try to understand the areas that need improving on and work on them whenever possible and try to approach those problems in a different way each time, sometimes stumbling upon answers by accident but mostly ending up none the wiser. I set myself 5yrs to learn so these drawings mean nothing to me ... just the problem solving and learning during the process. I hope the compressed charcoal holds some answers because i'm running out of ideas
One things for sure ... i wish i had taken drawing seriously 30yrs ago

The details are quite vivid in this portrait~ Her blouse with the folds are very realistic.
You did a very beautiful work and I'm sure this took a lot of time, effort and technique
that you have mastered, Mark.  Very fine piece of art~

You're welcome, Mark... I can understand about the feeling of a long
battle lost.  At the moment, I am working on a very difficult portrait which
has taken a lot of my time and energy.  Her hair is curly with highlights here
and there, so I need to make sense of it all.   I will post this new portrait
in a new account....yes, once again I plan to change....I have a restless
spirit and nothing ever stays the same.  I have been discouraged this past
year as I want to become more serious with my drawings mostly.  I feel
that will be my strongest skill, as my step father has told me that my portraits
are realistic and very well done.  I have dabbled with the paint brush, but it
comes and goes.  I love the ballpoint pen for the past two years.  It's interesting
how our artwork evolves over the years....  I'll keep you posted about my new
account here and put you on my watch, okay?  I would like to continue to keep
track of your work here.  Best wishes~
