Wonderful shading on the fabrics. I find this even more difficult than hair. It is a pity that the displayed picture is only about 1/8 the size of the (very large) drawing, so that we cannot see your pencil strokes.
By the way, the Thumbnail link in the description does not display.

Thank you, Mark. You have done a very good job in getting details in the very dark areas.

You're welcome ... A very unpleasant experience, a total nightmare on the smooth surface. So much easier with more tooth on the paper ... i'm just glad the experience is over.

OMG this is stunning!!!
I know going dark with graphite is so hard. I think that charcoal and carbon pencils can help a lot, but for sure it's definitely difficult to achieve a nice plain black working with pencils.

Thanks, keeping my fingers crossed about the charcoal. Looking forward to trying them out.

Oh I've just noticed this submission - did you have to press it hard? Not sure what happened.
What an amazing drawing though! The fabric is as smooth as it can be, hard to do materials that are shiny but somehwat "matte" (never gets real white highlights) and you did an excellent job with it, awesome!

Very nice. I find fabric very challenging. Very difficult to get shadows and reflected light in the shadows right, but you've nailed it

Thanks Vic, probably learned more doing this one than i have learned all year so it served it's purpose. I do love the challenges of fabrics though.

Hey Mark,
what can I say, the contrast between the dark and lighter parts on the fabric look amazing.
So are the textures of the fabrics.
I am not sure about the face though....something disturbs me, but I cannot say what.... maybe it's the monday morning feeling
Anyway, great job as always.....

Thanks Kris, yes so hard to spot little things when you've been staring at it for so long. I'll definitely bear it in mind when next i get it out in a couple of weeks. Nose shape looks out and the mouth and chin could do with more work but both myself and the drawing need a little time apart for a while damn those Monday morning blues

Thank you, that silk ... so many layers. Every day i looked at it and it still wasn't dark enough

another amazing piece from you!
it looks so perfect and clean, from just looking at the outcome I never would've thought there was any struggle with the materials, fantastic job

Thank you, it was one of those pieces that i couldn't find a nice way forward and i ended up wandering around the drawing aimlessly not knowing where or what to do ... so bloody frustrating and insecurity popped up and i started making stupid decisions out of desperation. I thought those days were long gone ouch Took a long time to come to grips with it and turn it around and into something albeit somewhat overworked to death

I think you definitely won the battle in controlling the darks. I always get stressed when a Very black tone is in the drawing, yet it's one of your reasons in selecting the reference. Then there's the not making it shinny... because I used graphite, which tends to be an attention seeker. There's no taking a photo without seeing the shiny darkness in your drawing.. Charcoal can become your best friend. The application of it, and the paper you use is the key.
I like the contrast of the light and shadows. You've drawn the clothe beautifully. It's lovely!

Thanks, i haven't discovered a nice dark application that works for me yet so it's a weekness that i relish taking on when i get a chance, had to try it like this though but no ... not this way for me. i'm keeping my fingers crossed with the charcoal, i've used willow in the past and loved the subtle tones but never the compressed ... nice deep darks though

Hmm... I should take on graphite more often, so I remember what the heck worked for me.

Ah yes, i've learned so much in the last 4 yrs using graphite and probably forgotten half of it I keep loads of wips on my computer to refer to in the hope of remembering. It feels like every time i get a new thing to store in the old memory i have to discard something older because of lack of room up there
