what did you use to achieve the dark background?

I used a Kooh i Noor 8B woodless pencil, i used an old paintbrush which has the bristles cut shorter and gently scrubbed the graphite flat using small circular movements and gradually built up layers ... it's only A4 so it didn't take too long.

Two days, and two incredibly impressive drawings Mark - I love the softness you have achieved on your sons features, and the light through his hair is incredible - another fantastic smooth, professional portrait - excellent

I really like this, Mark. This is a great example of how light play on a subject can really make a drawing great.

Mark, I am enjoying these online forums. It's hard to find people locally that are even mildly interested in pencil portrait drawing. I appreciate finding other pencil artists like you who don't mind sharing techniques and at least sample work for inspiration.

I hear you Greg, plenty of artists here where i live but no serious pencil artists so being online to me is like being back in the art studio at uni .. sharing ideas and techniques from every one there and getting inspired by brilliance and enthusiasm. I can't imagine being without it now.

Well, there is no doubt my online connections influences who I draw and how I draw it. Thank you for your comments, Mark!

You're welcome.... I must say your self portrait is brilliant.... I haven't got the nerve to inflict a self portrait on the world. Ha ha

Hey it wasn't easy you know you will have to one day .. it's in the artists big giant book of rules. I'm sure that in there somewhere it says that "all artists do at least one self portrait"
. It bloody better have or i just did this for nothing
