Every patrol along the spheres of HELLESPONT is a journey into the deep, away from the glowing veils of the homely nebula and into the dark, interstellar gulf that separates the colonies from the nearest settled systems. For the duration of the assignment, every array and antenna of the vessel peers into the void, waiting for someone, or something, to look back.
Yet, despite the existential nature of standing guard at the edge of the civilized universe, the first journey of every ship into the deep is also seen as a joyous occasion. Much like the sailors of old commemorated their first passing over the equator, the Terran starfarers hold a small ceremony when they first make the journey past the charted borders of their home domain. Though unseen, that border marks an important step: It demonstrates the ability of this fledgling interplanetary power to send ships far and beyond its suns sphere of influence.

In the history of every world, ever since the Third Power on Earth, this is seen as a milestone toward becoming part of the galactic community. A step worth remembering, whenever it is taken anew by another vessel making its way on patrol.
