Odd things rarely happen on the owl nebula frontier. Most of the barren worlds there are like frozen in time, without life, tectonics, or impacts of cosmic debris. What motion there is follows well-documented patterns: The cosmic clockwork of planetary systems, the sluggish ebb and flow of cosmic phenomena.

For this reason, Captain Herrim looked into the matter personally, when the ship's sensor operators reported unusual readings. That kind of thing never happened on this route, not on his watch anyways.

Studying the readouts, the captain’s eyes gleamed with excitement.
"Very well, lieutenant. It looks like you've found us a mystery."
"There is a ninety-four percent chance the anomaly shows due to faulty equipment.", the positronic board computer buzzed. Captain Herrim frowned through his bushy beard. "Right, Argo, but I'm not going to let this chance to change course slip so easily!"

Before the electronic brain could protest his resolve, he returned to the center chart and addressed the navigators.
"Plot a course for Gamma Seven and prepare the launch of another probe. Let's have a look down there."
