SO, uh, let's just say I was...displeased with how the Anime Arc dragged on, shall we?
And rather than have characters protect her, as others dissatisfied with the story have done, I did what I do best and broke her mind like a breadstick. I do watch a lot of SMG4, and his recent arcs have been genuinely impressive. Hell, his work in general is better than most TV shows! And the Anime arc was going well, too. But then, The Inkling Disappearances happened. And it alllllll fell apart. I don't even have the motivation to do a long-winded rant about how bad it was. The more I stare at this image, the more I feel nothing for it. I just wanna...put it up and get it out the way. So let me just outline the three main issues I have with the arc, keep it simple;
WON: It's way too long. I thought World War Mario (which came out a WEEK after I made this, to give you an idea of how long I've been sitting on this one) would be the end but IT'S STILL FUCKING GOING. I know next week's is supposedly the last but frankly it was a chore to watch this week's episode. Probably won't even bother with the last one. I think it would've made more sense if the Anime arc ended after the ban was lifted, we have a few more episodes concerning the Splatfest and THEN we get into this little mini-arc concerning the Inklings getting kidnapped.
TOO: Meggy's in no real danger, not really. I've played enough Sonic games to know when a character has Plot Armour and she is SWIMMING in it. The torture and the trauma, yes, but the risk of death? Nonexistent. And when it goes back into stupid territory after the arc finally ends, do you think she's even going to remember any of this? Nope. It'll be like it never happened. It'll be the Freedom Planet torture scene all over again...which, considering my anger towards THAT spiraled into War Lilac, I suppose it really does explain why I even bothered with War Meggy. I guess history repeats, huh?
FREE: The villain reveal. For a series that goes with characters ranging from stupid to petty to just plain weird, it does have some damn good villains. Waluigi...well what do you want me to say, that was handled perfectly. Beaten down, ostracised, forgotten and...well, rejected. And he weaponised it! It took Waluigi's infamous status and did something chilling, effective and meaningful with it. He was bombastic, he was loud and crazy, he had fun with his victory, it was great! Rapper Bob wasn't quite as good, but it gave a good delve into his worldview and his relationship with Boopkins, fleshing out a character that was mostly kind of flat to me. So, who is the villain of this new arc? Is it a new guy? A returning villain? Is it someone out for revenge against Inklings? Is it Octavio, Tatar, Axol?! Is it-
It's Francis. You know, the otaku, weeabo COMIC FUCKING RELIEF that is suddenly this super powerful bad guy out of nowhere? SURE, I can buy that(!) Well, whatever, right? At least his plan should be-oh, wait, he wants to murder all the Inklings so he can make an island full of waifus and he can just summon OP anime dudes to defend himself.
...YEAH OKAY I'm gonna do the rant. I was genuinely upset at this reveal. The whole second half of the arc from The Splatfest Incident onwards was incredibly dark, downright terrifying and depressing! Its tone was set in stone for the longest time. Then he turns up with his fucking Filthy Frank "NHHHYEESS" sound bites and it clashes so hard with the tone they were going for that it genuinely derails the entirety of the arc for me. It's just too out of place. It'd be like going through all of Freedom Planet and it turns out that Brevon isn't actually the main bad guy, but the fucking Bird Guard. The one who says "Weh"? THAT one? Yeah. And I very much doubt any genuine harm is coming to him, either. His end will be quite comedic, tonally jarring and short. I certify it.
Look, I'm not angry at Luke or Kevin. They're talented people with a good grasp of comedy, drama and timing. And Meta Runner, RWBY-Lite or otherwise, looks dope. I might even watch it, see if it's good. But OH MAN did they drop the ball on this arc. It's downright astonishing how much it deflates after that reveal. Maybe it's just me, though. You like the arc, more power to you. To me, it's just kind of a case of aiming for the stars followed by a crash. Hence why I made this as a sort of vent piece. Plus an excuse for War Pearl to be an evil little shit, as she do. Now, is War Meggy going to join the lineup? Not really. I might use her here or there, but really, this is just venting. I'm not comfortable using a War version of what is essentially someone else's fan character. Plus, I'm fairly sure they might not...appreciate me taking one of their characters and making her evil like this. Doesn't feel right, you know? Really, I'm just sort of...well, whatever. The arc's gonna finish next week, and hopefully there might be a bit of a longer gap between arcs this time. Make sure it doesn't spiral out of control like it did here. I'm certain they can make the next arc better. Everyone fucks up every now and then, don't they?

Oh, and if you're wondering who I'd pick as a villain for the Anime Arc over Francis? Sonic. No, really. The SMG4 version of Sonic is already a bitter creature who knows that the world hates him and his games, and the Inklings have done a better job at being 90's than he ever has. He has a reason to hate them, and to use them to get himself back up to the same level as Mario. Plus I like to headcanon that Waluigi picked up the Power of Rejection from elsewhere. And where better to source it than the guy who's been the butt of every gaming joke for the past two decades? Okay it's not great but it's better than a fucking weeb gecko.

I don't follow any of SMG4's videos nowadays, but I'm guessing this warmonger met the same fate as DBZ Broly when DBS Broly came out.
Though, you could make a warmonger Agent 3 kinda based off this instead. But that's just my opinion.

I don't watch SMG4 so I'm not sure I'm qualified to comment on its pacing issues, but based on what I'm hearing here, I agree with your points. Specifically #3, since it sounds like a logical conclusion of #1: a story that ran for so long that the authors forgot how it was supposed to end, so they made a lazy plot twist to get themselves out of their problem easily. I was gonna check out this Anime arc myself to figure out how much of this is true, but that bit about Francis (especially if it's THAT Francis from Super Paper Mario) convinced me that it's not worth my time.
As for point #2, I'm glad that you used the torture scene from Freedom Planet as the example, since that was the point where I realized just how protected Lilac was. What looked like great hardship and growth potential was squandered so easily that I gave up on GalaxyTrail's story and turned to fanworks like yours. Seeing it happen with this Meggy girl sounds like another reason not to check SMG4 (and that Meta Runner thing by extension) if it's the same kind of author behind the story.
That said, I do have to point out that this particular turning of a Warmonger is suitably rushed and lazy. Not saying it's bad, I just find it funny that the writing around this is bad like the character it targets. No dissection of psyche, no deeper reasoning, not even a decent struggle. Just "break already, dammit" until it eventually happened. I guess it's because this particular character/story doesn't deserve better? If so, good work.

Buuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut yeah, the transformation is very rushed. And VERY lazy. I was kind of half-winging it, as I didn't want to make it WAY too long. I'm trying to cut down on the waffle, you know? The issue is that Warmonger turning is supposed to take place either over the span of a few days for general grief (Lilac, Marie) or a few seconds with extreme trauma (Markus, Callie). So having it happen over the span of a few minutes with general trauma? Yeah. I'm gonna be honest, I was STRUGGLING to find anything to use for this...hence why I sat on it for a week. I mean Meggy's gone through a lot over the past two years, but she's not the character to kind of let it affect her, so that doesn't really work. Kind of wasn't until I discovered World War Mario had a character she was slowly getting friendly with get shiskabobed, that was enough of a reason for me. As it stands, it's mostly Pearl forcing the transformation using her powers, but I dunno, that's not really getting into the swing of things, is it? I might just get rid of it, give it another rewrite. OR, turn it into a proper story. The SMG4 Warmonger Arc. I can write those too, after all.
I mean, I don't hate them for doing it. It's not quite the level of fuck-awful writing as...THAT scene, it's more that the SMG4 canon is comedy-first and the drama just sort of...happens. I do understand what they were going for with this reveal. I just, don't think they did a very good job of it. But that's okay. Everyone has those moments where things just don't go according to plan.

Yeah, judging from what I'm seeing here, Meggy isn't really traumatized enough to become a Warmonger. I mean, it should have probably happened sooner if it was ever going to, as even people who don't let trauma affect them are still mounting an effort against it and, as luck would have it, sometimes those efforts slip. Maybe if Meggy had a few scenes gradually setting up the drama, it might have been more effective... but, you know, protected.
Of course, there's the matter of SMG4 being comedy-first. Perhaps it was a mistake to take the drama too seriously? I'm not sure if this incident is the authors playing a joke on viewers or something, but from what I'm seeing here they were never that good at drama and probably shouldn't have bothered. But I guess it was worth a shot? I mean, GalaxyTrail ruined FP1 with its awfully executed drama, but we wouldn't have War Lilac without that and, if nothing else, they might hopefully wise up for the sequel. I don't expect them to, but I'm talking about experience here and how authors are still humans who learn from mistakes, just like the rest of us. Maybe SMG4 will get its act together in a newer arc?

EEEEH this is all kind of just me acting off instinct. Part of me feels I should have waited another week or so to think of something good for this. As it stands, it's...fine? People like it a lot, so I guess it's workable for now. I'm still apprehensive if I'm even going to reuse the character, as I don't like making custom versions of fan characters without permission, but eh, maybe when I find a way to make the turning work. I have a much better idea in mind, as it stands.
I dunno, I feel this is a time to not bring out the torches and pitchforks. Perhaps actually offer a second chance? I have good faith that they understand what they did wrong here. It's wherever they'll make that mistake again, THAT'S when we can call them out for real. And, I suppose, that would be the case for GalaxyTrail, too. The problem is, there is so few things I feel can deserve a second chance. For most game companies, you give them the yard and they won't just take the mile but the entire piss alongside it. And then non-apologise about it later...and then do it again. The word, "Trust", comes to mind. And SMG4 was good at Drama, the Waluigi arc did it fine. As did the Anime arc...again, until they turned a pathetic comic relief into the main super powered villain.

No, it's fine that you went for it anyway. Mistake, maybe, but if you can do better then you should totally go for it. I mean, instinct is how you got War Lilac years ago and now all these other Warmongers are actually becoming a thing.
Oh, so it's more like they only screwed up that badly this time? You did mention Waluigi and it made your suggestion of Sonic as the villain all the more viable to me, at least based on what I've heard so far. Francis was a very poor choice and I'm already guessing they'll bring him back in a later arc, like some kind of unwanted favorite. But it's a mistake at best and hopefully they'll remember what they were doing right. The same goes for GalaxyTrail too, they do deserve a second chance. I just don't think they'll make it count, is all.

Exactly. I remember when I was bashing GalaxyTrail pretty much every chance I got, but eventually decided to take the feedback meant for them and create something for myself instead. It's not unlike the Warmongers, channeling a destructive emotion into a productive effort, one that I happen to care more about by now than I ever did about FP. I'm not sure how much of an "improvement" it might be since I wasn't doing it to one-up GalaxyTrail, but I do feel a need to do better than the terrible story they wrote for FP1.
If it's any consolation, I'm glad to see you actually making more works like this instead of more empty complaints. I mean, this one might have been sorta based on one, but you clearly care enough about SMG4 to go for it and that's a step forward for you right there.

Second, that's a good question...buuuut not one I have a good one for. I GUESS the best place to start would be the Freedom Dies with Me story. It's where Warmongers started to get set in stone, though it wasn't until this year I got serious. I am planning on writing a sort of article on Warmongers, if you don't mind of waiting for that.
